For the above reason as pointed out by Smurph I will be trying the thinner bearing for the top when I start my conversion.smurph wrote:The R1 stem is a little short. The thinner the bearings, the better for putting R1 forks on the RZ. 1mm thicker bearings == .080" less thread engagement for the stem nut. Of course, one could cut a pocket into the top triple clamp to counter sink the nut a little. But if you want the project to remain easy, then go with 2 of the standard RZ lower taper bearings. (Or a kit that has two of these bearings, if available.)
You will need a 5mm spacer below the lower bearing on the stem regardless of the bearing thickness. This is because the RZ has a sleeve on the steering neck that hangs down 4.5mm that houses the original lower seal. You cannot press a bearing flush to the lower R1 triple because of this. The spacer is mandatory unless you want to cut the steering neck down.

Well, I about to do this swap myself, just assembling the final parts. For the bearings, just call ALL BALLS, they are awesome.
I have a question about tires though, what size do you guys run up front?
Stock for the RZ is
Front tyre dimensions: 90/90-18 51H
Rear tyre dimensions: 110/80-18 58H
Stock for the R1 is
Front tyre dimensions: 120/70-ZR17
Rear tyre dimensions: 190/50-ZR17
I thought about running stock R1 tire size, but that would make my front tire bigger than my rear (stock RZ rear end) and I thought that would upset things. What tire size do you recommend running up front?
Thanks,
Kevin

Well, I'm about halfway through the swap. I got the old front end of, and the new forks mounted. The only thing left to install is the upper triple tree, then I can mount the wheel and start sorting out the connections from the various controls.
I have to say, the swap is going smoother than expected. I hope to take it for a ride tomorrow, and I'm pumped.
To everyone considering this, DO IT, its way simpler than you think it will be.

For speedo right now I just have a GPS mounted on my handlebars. I need to move the dash though, as the bars don't quite clear the speedo and temp guage at the ends of their travel. I'm thinking going to R1 dash soon, depends on money flow.
I found a new tire in R1 size for cheap so thats whats on mine too, doesn't look like it'll be a problem, but haven't ridden it yet.
Here's a few pics
