The shock hole is closed off it appears ... that's what threw me. Sure thing on the dims Steve. Off the top of my head it is somewhere between 8.25 & 8.5" wide with caps (I want to say 8.375"). The arm is 180 miles west of here ATM. I'll be going back over there within a couple weeks ... I'll get a precise measurement then if you can wait a bit.

Found the thread I had posted some info in ...

"I just rec'd my FZ600 & FZR400RR swingers yesterday. The 600 weighs ~ 8 lbs while the 400 comes in under 10 (both w/o linkage attached). At 11" forward of the center of the axle slots (~ the widest point of any 17 to 18" tire), the 600 is about 6.5" wide between the arms, where the 400 is ~ 7.75" (the stock RZ arm looks to be a bit under 6" at that point). Pivot tube widths are identical at 8.375" (w/o endcaps)"

... so with caps, the pivot tube width is 8.5" wide. Between the flanges at the axle, it is at least 8.5" wide as I recall. The linkage was a bit hard to find but I found a UK set in good condition..

Remember tho that if ya use anything over the 421 kit means you need to have your cases machined,Personally I dont see the point in spending the dollars to use the kit and only end up with a 420 at best....Also,Make sure ya use the cheetah and not the cub/supercub.

I hope Mr Steve doesnt mind me posting a link to his site....

A lil job he did 4 me :)

Ive been dealing with the two masters(Rgv Steve +Steve Murphree)
for a little while here in the USA,I would highly HIGHLY recommend them both! - I have looked at stuff from Mick Costin as I have a ton of AUS mates but his stuff is a lil pricey,UK very likely the same way....If ya need help here shipping to you in Aus let me know as generally im sending stuff there weekly anyways and would be happy to add yer stuff into the equation :) - I can certainly help with the cheetah stuff as im a trinity racing dealer / Yamaha dealer to boot :)

Thanks for the info, I've looked at Mick's stuff as well, it's nice but like you say it's expensive (probably worth it though), Thanks for the offer with shipping, I might be taking you up on that!

About the cheetah stuff though, my buddy has a dealership as well and offered me the bits at cost to help with promotions etc...that's why I've decided to go with the Aprilia frame, he's doing 3 others and I just didn't want the hassle of trying to get pipes custom made for the RZ lump in another frame when he's going to go through the trouble anyway! I will probably go for the 535cc with Mattoon cases (he's building 485's so I certainly can't have a slower bike than him!!).

The main problem we have here in Cairns is that the next nearest city (over 125,000 pop) is over 1000 miles away! so we have the tyranny of distance, but with the net and ebay etc...we do OK, it's just not easy.

I think Steve's RGV looks fantastic, I want my bike to look half that good! and now that the greenback is sliding south very quickly and our dollar is going up, I may just be ordering some bespoke equipment from RGVSteve in the near future....Hey Steve can you do Triple trees? I'd like one that fits my GSXR front end and the Aprilia frame so I don't need spacers etc...

Cheers

Xen,

As Steve said its set up exactly the same as the stock RZ500.....I have my stregnths and many weakness's - I am many things but an engineer I am not :)

I have spent years and years racing the 350's and yea,I know the motors very very well,Regardless I consider myself not a bike builider but more of an assembler :)

I recognise the engineering skills and ability of the two Steves,I recognise and acknowledge my own lack of skills in the same area.....As such I wanted a modern day swingarm that was gonna be plug and play,Basically,I send it to Steve,He returns it to me and it bolts in,There are no other mods needed to make this thing work.......It literally is plug and play...From chain alignment / suspension it just bolts right in.

Everything has been machined / manufactured to the highest standard,The attention,Care and detail taken is breathtaking,Even the way the stuff came back packaged was nothing short of awesome :)

xen,

Just a thought, based on your meassurement of 8.375 (213mm) for your
400RR arm, if you removed 6.5 mm from each end of the pivot tube this
should put the finished length at 200mm which is the length of the stock
RZ350 pivot tube, the RZ dust caps are 1mm thick, the washer inside the dust cap is 2mm thick, add the washer/dust cap thickness will give a
finished overall length of 206mm which is what the RZ arm is with the
dust caps installed. Not sure how the 400 bearings compare to the RZ's
but thats an easy fix. Anyway, just a thought.

The arms come right up to the very ends of the pivot tube, so machining them down even 1/8 each side would be into the arms (vs the FZ600 arm which has 1" or so of snout). Pretty much the whole forward half of the arm is a monolithic casting. Above all though, the chain path with a '06 GSXR 600 rear wheel is into the frame tube ~ 1/4" ... so the mods will be on the frame.

xen,

Thats interesting, any chance you'll put up a picture or two of the
swingarm? It's interesting learning about all the different swingarm
designs.

Sure thang Steve. I don't have any pics here but I'll take and post some as soon as I get to Des Moines. I'll be setting up an all encompassing GSXRZ thread when I actually make some progress. It's a bit tough when both the bike and machine tools are so far away.

I thought I had stuffed up and was accidently reading another forum.
Cub and super cub got bagged early. ( how does serval rate in the opinions poll )
Plug and play swing arm conversions, that's brave.
I've done a few and every one is different, got a car jack and washers, you may have to spread the frame or pack the swinger if she doesen't fit.
Chain alignment Pfft, not a problem, O rings flex left and right, Don't they?
