A bit going on, have to make the swing arm and drop the bike to its new height so I can position then fit the helmet dent and filler to the tank.

Getting lower. -25 mm front and back. I would like to do something with the forks. Dont really like the look of them sticking out the top like that. Looking at this pic I need to have a tidy up.

Years ago (late 80's) i helped a mate motard his yz490,had the tubes pushed through like yours. We just bent up a simple ali plate off the head stock bolt,up n over the tubes. Looked agricultural as hell but saved his life at least once....
Very interested to see finsl swinger Dave, any reason apart from strength, why you didn't go with ali?

Dave, I shortened my KTM forks by moving spacers inside. Not sure what the innards of your forks are like but you might be able to do similar, where ride this is mostly flat so you dont need huge movement perhaps?

Motard yz465 would be a wild ride.

Main reason for steel is I dont have the equipment to weld ali + weight over the rear wheel is an advantage.

Hay Jon, tahnx for the idea. ill pull them to bits and have a look at the internals to see if I can do that.

Salt is dead flat, no rear suspension and about 25mm at the front will do as I dont run front brakes.

Although I did get airborne in 2014 at 100 mph + on my way to 140 mph, hit a small depression in the salt. Bike handled it without a problem. These things are so well sorted handling wise in standard trim. Not sure how this will handle when I am finished. Well yes I am, it will be even better, longer and lower is what all the fast guys do on their bikes so what im doing isnt ground breaking just not sure its been done to one of these.

Dave, I should qualify my comment, I didnt move spacers as such. What I was doing really was moving the amount of spacing to the other end, thereby shortening the length of the leg. I expect you could increase / add a spacer that would pull the leg part lower in the system by effectively shortening the throw of the cartridge etc in the same way, its just working out where.

I really dont like the idea of those sticky up forks tops at speed... scary...

Really digging this thread. :smt038

I sent user FrameMaker an email with a link to this thread.

He is very, very smart and may have suggestions for the sticking up front fork issue (and other stuff). :smt047

Nope, not true... none of that is true... not smart, and certainly no suggestions :smt003

Actually I may not have any suggestions that haven't already been made. JonW already mentioned internal spacers. The basic idea is to shorten the pre-load spacer at the top and add a "top-out" spacer at the bottom of the fork (internal) mechanism. Of course there are different things going on inside the fork depending on the internal mechanism type. But this is generally how to shorten ("lower") a fork. The top-out spacer reduces the travel (makes the overall length shorter), and shortening the pre-load spacer sets the pre-load back to normal. Some shops will use an additional top-out spring rather than a solid spacer which may be a good idea if you are reducing the travel to a very minimal amount... just so you have some over-travel (at full rebound extension) if you hit a bump larger than anticipated.

By the way, looks like a very fun project. :smt023
cheers,
Julian

Thanx guys, ill rip into the forks and report back.

Swinger tacked together, just need to fit the pivot tube then make some bushes.

Edit: And make the chain adjusters as the RHS im using is smaller than the original material.

I was a fabricator for 10 + years so it pretty easy.

Just a matter of working it out in my head what I need to do first, we always got a drawing to work to and quite often the materials were cut as well, delivered to your work area on a pallet.

yeah thats the problem of fabbing on yer own time, you have to think it thru and then come up with a billion options... LB and I were just discussing this very thing today LOL

Good work Dave. Really interested to know what this will be like when done. Reminds me that Pezz was going to do something similar on his off road RG250 a few years back ISTR, will find the thread: http://www.2strokesdownunder.com/viewtopic.php?t=1305" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanx for the link Jon, he did a good job of it.

I was thinking a bit less off road more dirt road/flat tracker if ya get what I mean. Maybe with high pipes. Or a low two into one down the centre. Ill have to try and find the two into one thread.

But one bike at a time or ill get nothing finished. LOL
