YSR50 build

Post by expat »

So, my YSR beat out my hybrid RZ project for attention this winter. Primarily due to funds but also because I am planning to go racing on my Honda RS125 this season which will also take up time and $$$!
I picked the YSR up about 4 years ago and stripped it down into boxes after I got fed up of banging my knee's on it in the garage!
Plan is similar to my RZ, full rebuild with all stainless fasteners, plus a number of one off stainless parts, a Toomey exhaust and braided line on the front, other than that it will be mostly stock, possibly an aftermarket shock if I can find one for reasonable money..

So, this is the bike when I first got it.

This is the progress so far, frame, cradle, swinging arm and fork lowers powder coated and some aluminum bronze swing arm bushes made.

I am picking up more parts this week and will post more pic's as progress is made.

Hi guys!

The YSR should be a fun project, I have ordered a ton of parts so hopefully progress will be pretty quick! I have also been busy encouraging my son to smoke!!

Got a load more parts back from the powder coater, I use Tom at "Toms cycle recycling" he does a great job at a reasonable cost.

The Fed Ex guy also left me a couple of boxes of parts with more on the way!! I laughed when I saw the gasket set, that's a full set for the whole engine!!

Some nice sticky rubber!!

with a bike this small i would think a couple of big o-rings would do for tyres. :smt043

I got a set of replacement frame decals yesterday. Custom made with VIN and date I/D. A nice touch on a good restoration. Highly recommend Replacement Decals they are great to deal with.

Damn love these little bikes . i can get ones with sub 300kms like new for about $900 but the cost after that is stopping me getting one ,

DG pipe or one with the 2 little cans would be sick !

The pipe with twin cans is... was made by Calamari racing, it was discontinued many years ago. Toomey also made a pipe which is what I am looking for, that will match my RZ! Ohlins and Fox also made a shock for one but they are rare and expensive.
I am trying to keep my build cost equal to an estimated resale value just in case I ever decide to sell (not in the plans at the moment!

Sticker kit arrived today so I can color match the Red and start painting..... Progress!!

Got a box of OEM parts today and just scored an Ohlins shock off of ebay!!
All I need to find now is a decent Toomey exhaust and it will be the same spec as my RZ!

Got the wheels rubbed down ready for paint, I am going to blast the hubs. also my friend Ken finished the stainless swing arm bolt and is now working on the engine mounting bolts, front and rear axle plus a side stand bolt. He really is a great guy!! I pressed the aluminum bronze bushes we made into the swing arm and there is virtually no play, perfect!
Ohlins shock should arrive on Monday but needs some tidying. Not sure what to do with my decal kit, the Red is the wrong shade and when clear coated has a Pink tint to it so they are not getting used.
