Update:

Things are going well so far. Bike is actually going back together now.

Clutch master cylinder is rebuilt and refitted. Just needs to be bled.

Bike is currently in the shop having valve clearance set. I only needed to buy a dozen shims and shockingly they are fairly inexpensively priced direct from Yamaha. Also looks like I have some room with the valve clearances before it bottoms out and new valves are required.

Carbs are all clean with new O-rings, all reassembled and ready to go back on the motor.

Hoping to have it all ready to ride in the next week or so.

Nice effort on sorting it out, that's a fair bit of work.

The bike had sat unused for at least 2 years. There was no point in even trying to start it until all the maintenance was done and fluids replaced.

I did all the work myself except for the actual replacing of valve shims.

The FZ ran today. :smt023 :smt003

Valves are all adjusted. Compression test showed all cylinders in the 160 - 170 range. :smt023

Next step is Out of Province Inspection. Then registration and insurance and I will be able to ride it. :smt003

I don't think that every province requires this but Alberta does. It is a technical inspection by a licensed mechanic to ensure all vehicles that come from outside the province meet a govt standard prior to being allowed to be registered.

My friend the bike shop owner gave me a deal on the Inspection and it still cost $140.

Anyway, brought the bike home and did final reassembly this evening with enough time to get out for a shake down ride.

Kinda impressed by how tight the bike feels on the move. Everything works and nothing squeaks, rattles or shakes. The transmission is a thing of beauty and the motor revs smooth as silk.

Downsides are a stumble as the throttle is cracked, the clutch is clearly on its way out and the seat foam has seen better days. Oh and the stock brakes are CRRRAAAAP!

I figure a few hundred bucks worth of tuning and upgrades and she will be 100%.

We have the same thing here if you buy a vehicle thats registered out of state and you want to register it in NSW (and vice versa), we call it a Blue Slip, I guess the paper used to be blue. Its the same test they perform if your bike is out of registration for >3months. Our annual inspection is called a Pink Slip, was on pink paper in the olden days i guess. The Blue slip is like a bigger version of the Pink test. Here a mechanic has to be trained and licensed to perform these tests.

No annual inspection and Out of Province is a one time deal. So who has it better now? :)

Ah to have a population base, I pay that much just for my Harley.

Glad to hear the FZ is going Peter, aren't 80's brakes a thing of beauty.

Currently the bike is sitting out front of my work quietly dripping fuel onto the parking lot. :(

Apparently some of the fuel lines have hardened up and need to be replaced. Not the end of the world but just one of a bunch of small issues that need to be chased down and fixed.

Yep, those 80's brakes truly SUCK! They are gonna get replaced toute suite with a set of 4 pot Triumph calipers. This bike is not so mint as to be above a few modern components.
