FZR400 First Impressions
So I bought a FZR400 some time ago with a 600 motor in it and just got out for my first ride on the bike. I was very amazed, the thing is tiny and goes awesome. Handling is amazing. Overall its really a great bike, tight and steady yet very compliant. I am really used to the modern supersport package which is similar in size but due to the riding position of the 400 it just feels mini. Still need some jetting work but very impressed so far. Highly recommended!
Re: FZR400 First Impressions
Just this weekend I spoke to a friend who bought one as a donor for a hybrid.
He's as fond of it as you are though he only has the 400 Cc. engine.

That is a cool bike Evan! It looks like fun to me. The 600 engine is a bolt in Into that chassis correct?
One parked next to my bike up at Alice's on Sunday.
We were trying to figure out why that FZR600 had an aluminum swingarm. Somebody mentioned it might be a 400. Then the dude walked up and said it was. This was a very clean example.
Enjoy yours.

And he said the 400 would have an aluminum frame as well, wheras the 600 has a deltabox in steel ...

Re: FZR400 First Impressions
Yes, the 400 got all the fun alum bits but for some reason the subframe is still STEEL and weighs a ton. The 600 was a dog of a bike due to the steel everything. The 400 with a 600 in it is torquey and all around good times.

Re: FZR400 First Impressions
I am going to have to hunt down someone with a stock motor in one to compare. Quite curious. The 600 motor goes like mad and actually has way more torque than I expected.
Re: FZR400 First Impressions
Evan you have the best of both bikes, I've owned both models in the past, the 600 had the better motor for obvious reasons and the 400 had lighter aluminum frame and swinging arm ect. The 400 with its original motor you had to rev it to the moon to get any sort of power from it, were as the 600 had way more torque low down and through out the range. After riding the 600 motor you will be disappointed with a stock FZR400/ motor.

Re: FZR400 First Impressions
Thanks for the comparison. I was very surprised with the torque of the 600 in the 400 chassis. Pulls right from 4000. It doesn't hit that hard as you rev it out so either they had rather linear power delivery (not used to after riding modern 600's) or I need to do some jetting work. The pipe is still a bit sooty so I think there is a good chance some jetting work is required.
Re: FZR400 First Impressions
The power is very linear and you have to also rev it to the moon to make power on the top end.

Re: FZR400 First Impressions
Any idea what the redline is on the 600 motor? My tach goes up to 14k redline but not sure if that is correct for the 4 or 6...
Re: FZR400 First Impressions
It's not that high for the 600 tho, I think it goes up to 1150, will have to check when I get home.

Re: FZR400 First Impressions
Yikes, I will need to double check which CDI the bike is running. I had it revving up in that range. These must have had rev limiters.
