Monster resurrection

Post by Zombie »

My 1988 Honda CR500R is being brought back from the dead. Purchased years ago for $800, it looked like a $800 bike.. I started ripping it apart for a cosmetic resto and replace a water pump seal, but as it often does, life happened. Now, several years later after marriage and 2 moves, my brother and I are putting this nuke powered rocket back together. Plans include a wide ratio transmission and HRC-sourced porting (its great to have friends who worked for Honda in the early '90s!) and other tomfoolery to make it even more explosive still. Pics to come soon!

A classic legend, good ones layed down 50-55 h.p. with few mods, and modified added 10hp to that, mid to high 60 h.p on a dirt bike that jumped almost 20 h.p in 1000 rpms....one. crazy fucking machine.

Did you see the other post last week of the guys CR500 AF ?

How about this for excitement how about a Liger 640cc big bore, or others.. http://rpmmfg.com/BigBoreStrokerCR640.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Truly insane. Couldnt possibly imagine desert racing a dirt bike with such sheer power...Even stock id....die.

Go for it CR 500 is a monster :smt026 :smt026 post some pictures.

After owning for some years the CR500 ( sold the bike some years ago )
and now owning a Husaberg FE 650 would say that both are monsters although Berg is a four stroke.

Enjoy !!!!!!!!!

Just for the sake of conversation...lol :smt002. Just.."hypothectically of course" :smt002. What specific steps would one follow to obtain a street registration..Ive seen a few diffrent approaches..just curious as to what other methods( not that that may be my goal...or anything) :smt044 ...lol My PM box is available.

hypothetically speaking.. :)

A person needs to add a full light kit, The Tusk Kit works really well to get it through the DMV, Same person would bring it to a small DMV for inspection, They check lights, turn signals, speedo and headlight, Street legal tires, Must have a smog sticker, Ebay is good for them if its missing.. :)

OR!! One might know someone that knows someone that you pay $100 to shove the paperwork through, Either way gets it done. :)

I will have to mention, The street legal CR500AF with sticky supermoto tires and wheels are a little nuts, They just are stupid fast, Keeping the front wheel on the road at any speed with a touch of the throttle is a challenge. :)
Also, Absolutely the worst gas mileage and range with the stock tank, 40 miles if lucky if you ride a little spirited...
Frequent piston changes as they eat the front of the piston with extreme porting and they are prone to cracking.
Also, Getting the CR crank weighted is well worth it, Crank Works in AZ do a weight mod to the crank which eliminates the vibrations, I did this mod to one of the 500's, it is smooooooth, The other one is a a lot more vibration, Your feet and hands go numb after a while.

Besides that, One of the nuttiest bikes on the street.. :)

I have never ridden one of the newer AF bikes, but it seems like a good idea just in terms of weight savings, along with slimmer ergonomics and bodywork. If it would shave pounds off my '96 CR500...
But I finally got the suspension sorted out with the steel frame...
Decisions ,decisions...

Wonder what that big-bore company could do with the Maico 700- it supposedly makes 90hp right off the showroom floor!

They sold street-legal CR500s in Austrailia right off the showroom floor.
Lucky bastards. :smt023
