My 1986 RC24/ VFR750R project

Post by Questo vecchio rz »

Always wanted this bike too, I got a unreal deal on this a month ago .. Advertised for alot more, walked it outta his driveway for only $800.00!! BOOYA! I'm really happy about this bike. She only has 24k on her...that's it!
Gear drive. Cams 90° V-4, IMO One of the best looking bikes and easily one if the best sounding bikes ever. This bike is a easy conversion, only replicating the HRC Ti left hand exhuast will be trouble.
It's going to be my Flying Fred Merkel replica, as he beat Rainey/ Schwantz for the AMA championship on a full HRC version, also we actually met Flying Fred on the freeway and had a crazy fun party at his condo ,right after he won the World Superbike championship. For me, it's just a stunning looking iconic bike after the modifications I'm doing.

Note..near perfect fuel tank, No rust, NO dents!! Dented tanks are deal breakers, too $$$ to get into, ruins a tight budget.

This is a fairly straightforward replica, I'm doing ,
1.) front,/rear wheel swap 4.5" or 5" CBR F2 or F3 ENKEI wheel swap. Gotta have multi spokes!
2.) Doing this replica 1pc. solo seat, offered by Airtech.
3.) Doing a custom Kerker replica 4-2-1 (Left hand side) spring loaded exhuast..
ITs a MUST have! No baffle, race can to hear the awesome engine note.

Nice find.

A Merkle tribute will be nice too.

Man, those things are absolute pigs for weight. The real racer was nothing like it's production counterpart. True factory effort, as you're well aware.
I rode those back in the day. Fast as F*ck, but were hard to change lines and didn't stop worth $h!t. Be careful riding that old boat anchor. Reminds me of my RZ500s, but a hell of a lot heavier.

Yes, they are era heavy, no doubt. They weight in about 15 lbs heavier than a RZ500...which you know already is a boat anchor...lol. This one, will be about 20-25 lbs lighter..but that's all I can strip off her...Better than nothing. Like many Honda's, once underway they become fairly nimble. The 17" conversion helps stability all way round.
Great bikes, pure legendary bulletproof engines, Honda broke five, 24 hr speed /endurance records on 100% stock 700 & 750cc production bikes, beat the Suzuki GSXR750 my quite a wide margin.

Your right! The 1986 AMA/ Transatlantic VFR racebikes were special there were only 6-8 built, Titanium connecting rods, full Magnesium cases, had different engine firing orders, Ti exhuast putting out close to 140 h.p. for a 750 in 1986. Typical Honda spare no expense racing program. This engine was a basis for the RC30 which became pure legend.
Show you how good the factory bikes were..Merkel and Rainey dominated on them, for a year then Merkels bike was a hand me down to Bubba Shobert who won, then YEARS later Doug Chandler used one to win the Daytona 200...

Here's a video demonstrateing how
good the bike was,, showing Wayne
Rainey starting dead last at Laguna Seca, and passing everyone including Schwantz for the win.
