Manual options for the leak prone RZ petcock

#1 Post by 75RD350rider » Wed Feb 24, 2016 12:57 pm

I ordered a manual replacement petcock for the RZ as I have never had good luck rebuilding the vacuum variety. It came as a single outlet smaller than the factory petcock and I am concerned about having enough flow volume for my motor. Long story short I was sorting through my Yamaha parts pile and came across a RD 400 manual petcock in good shape and lo and behold it fits the RZ tank.
I am sure Y'All probably already knew that but I just learned it. I have a plan for an adapter I am going to construct with a spare factory RZ button to attach to the manual RD 400 petcock handle. When all is said and done it will look factory and be a manual dual outlet petcock. More to follow...

I've had my RZ for nearly 20 years and replaced the petcock seals maybe 15 years ago, never had the slightest trouble with it. Maybe the body on yours has some wear or roughness making it difficult to get a seal. Nice when you find alternate parts that work without leaving your house.

Final mockup. The hole was drilled and tapped all the way through the the knob. The screw is threaded into both the knob and through the hole.drilled in the allen head bolt. It turns the petcock easily. Mount the petcock.to the tank next and install the sidecover so I can align the knob, mark the last hole to drill.

Had a seep from the sediment bowl. Went through my John Deere o-rings and found a suitable short term substitute. I will be ordering a proper o-ring as I am unsure if the JD part is ethanol resistant...
