RZ Rims on a R5 1972

#1 Post by michael cullen » Mon Feb 29, 2016 3:09 pm

Hey Again
Would the rims from a 85 RZ 350 fit the 72 R5 350 assuming the brakes aould have to be fitted as well. Came across a nice set recently.
Would I be able to use the sock 72 forks for those wheel.
As you can probably tell I am doing a custom application with my stock R5 to a flat track bike style.
Also wondering if anyone has a recomendation on putting a full floater monoshock assembly on the back end of the bike?

Thanks a bunch
Michael

R5 had drum front and rear from what I recall so no you cannot. There would be nowhere to hang the brakes in the front and would have to figure out a swingarm notch for the rear brake hanger.

And also no on the monoshock unless you heavily modify the frame and swingarm...gotta look at where these components currently mount to see if its even possible.

You would need full RZ front end then likely run into other mounting issues for the current hardware. I have no clue if the stock goofy R5 damper significantly increases the headset length and needs to be accounted for.

Anything is possible, depends on how much work you want to do. swap the whole RZ front end in and thats easy enough i bet, the rear is always possible if you can weld. Adding a rear disk brake is possible, I did that on my XT500 (see my site link below for the build info).

Absolutely right Jon...but if he doesn't know a drum to disk and mono to twin shock differences I would think its outside the range. I have personally never done the latter and i've built a ton of bikes.

You need more than just the wheels...

Either LC or RZ front ends are a direct swap on the R5 frame. R5 uses 34mm forks & the triple clamps are narrower than anything with disk brakes, so the RZ rotor bolts won't clear. My choice would be 81-82 LC wheels for the rear drum brake but the axle is a smaller diameter than the R5/RD350. It's possible to machine the backing plate & make some spacers to fit. The LC swing arm pivot is the same as R5, which you could convert it to twin shock.

It's possible to monoshock an R5 with the LC parts but you would need to relocate the battery, regulator & rectifier as well as modify the RH rear down tube to clear the swing arm bracing. I did a similar conversion to a TZ250 back in the '70s...

I've seen an Lc swinger in an RD 400 frame that worked.
If that helps the Lc is fairly narrow in the wheel department.

Anything can be done, but RZ wheels are heavy, narrow, and 18"

Personally if I was going to go through the effort I'd fit some lighter 17s for better rubber choice.
