I have had the same dial indicator for over 40 years. It always works and the battery is never dead.

Erm Use a degree wheel (print one out) and cobble up a piston stop from sparkplug.
Dial gauges of whatever design get into piston dwell issues and this variance can be significant when timing setup .. is in fractions of a mm.
Degrees on a wheel are Far more reliable and replicable.

I prefer this one:

Awesome tool. No batteries, no sensitive mechanic. Always keep it in my toolbox.

Loosen the lock-screw for the pin and shove in the pin.
Set the gauge mark to 0 and slightly tighten the lock-screw.
Slowly turn the engine over will push out the pin.
Tighten the lock-screw and turn in the gauge screw to the desired ignition advance (i.e, 2 mm BTDC for 20 deg BTDC for stock RDs).
Then slowly turn the engine until the piston is locked by the pin - voila, the crank is in the desired position and you can create some mark on the flywheel/housing
Remove the device and screw in the plug.
Strobe this position on the running engine.

The trick bit is the 1mm thread for the inner part. It act's like a micrometer (i.e. each of the 10 outside marks equals 0.1 mm)
The downside: Can't tell where to buy that nowadays. As it has no display, today's kids wouldn't buy it ?
Bye
Martin
