leaking fuel tank on rd 350 f2
Hi. i just wondered if anyone can help me. I have an rd 350 f2 with a fuel tank that weeps on the underside. Am I best to weld/braise the bottom of it or just line the inner with an ethanol proof slooshing kit. If so can anyone advise about the best to use.
cheers.

ah the joys of 80s Yamaha gas tanks.
i had one welded in several places then lined,so far so good.
it depends on if is just one spot or a motorcycle colander

Re: leaking fuel tank on rd 350 f2
Mine leaked through rust perforation at the very lowest point opposite the petcock. The rest of the tank was solid so I rinsed it with a rust remover and then built the outside up with some solder. The damage remained on the bottom surface, between the seam and the side, above the front of the side panel. I touched it up with a spray can after filing it smooth and it is still good nearly 20 years later.

Hi guys.My fuel tank used to be a motorcycle colander. I sent it away to have the worst holes welded. It was glass lined apparently really badly as it still weeps on the underside. Now not sure what or how to fix it. Will soldering fix it? If so what type of solder should i use? Any idea's....

A quality tank lining kit (POR15, Caswell) should take care of that issue without any problems. If you do use a tank liner kit, it is imperative you follow every step and in full compliance. Personally, I've done 4 tanks with the POR15 kit with excellent results. Have heard the Caswell kit to get the latest and greatest.

I use RedKote for tank repair. Easy to use and little prepwork needed. Ethanol will bleach the red color from it occasionally but doesn't effect the sealing properties. I get it from the local NAPA store. $25 USD a can. A can will do two large tanks easy. Use it OUTDOORS the fumes are toxic.

If it is really bad soldering might not be the solution. Mine was about an inch square area at the bottom corner, the seam was okay and the outside surface was rust free. If it is peppered with holes and the seams are rough a liner might be the best idea. I have never used a liner so I can't add to that but I consider them a last resort in fear that it might separate down the road, preparation is everything.roadrunner wrote:Hi guys.My fuel tank used to be a motorcycle colander. I just looked up Redkote as I have heard good things about it, their info says to solder any holes over 1mm.
