fast running, running away when key off is usually that its sucking air and dieseling. have you tested this engine with a leak test kit?

I have not tested it. It was not doing this before I changed the jetting. I will check to ensure that the carb boots are tight. I am pretty sure I tightened all the clamps but it was dark when I finished so I may have missed one. Would a stuck carb slide do this? I was able to get it back to a high idle by blipping the throttle but then it stuck again.

If you haven't done it, take the baffles out and clean them. If there is a vacuum hose between the carbs, make sure they are attached.

Found out why the engine was racing. Apparently the throttle cable is broken where it enters the handlebar housing. It was pulling the cable and causing the engine to race. Since I have to remove the cable, I might as well send the carbs out for cleaning as well while I wait for the new cable. Anyone know if you can replace the 90 degree elbow with something from another cable?

the elbow where it goes into the throttle block is part of the cable, see this pic:

Thanks Jon. I guess since that one is not working, I wont buy it. I will try JB Weld to see if I can fix the elbow.

I would not use temporary fixes with a safety item, which this is.

The Throttle cables are no longer available from Yamaha. The one that was on Ebay was also broken, just in a different spot. Trying to figure out where I can get one from. I dont like it either but if it the difference between not using the bike and using the bike, I cant see scrapping a perfectly good completely stock RZ just for a broken throttle cable. Does the 29L-26260-00 fit the 1989 model?

I found yamabits has a reproduction one that they say is based on the 1UA-26260-00 part number. I have ordered one to see.

I put an OEM 1UA cable on my '85 with stock carbs and also managed to modify it later to work with PWK28's. I think it actually superseded to the new number when I ordered it from Yamaha.

For the cable try the Banshee stuff as they do a lot of brand new twist throttle cables
On the right side smoking is the Seal in the right way around ?
If not will draw oil inform the gearbox side

Found out why it was smoking badly from the right pipe. Apparently the pilot circuit in the left hand carb was mostly plugged. Would also explain why it wouldn't run on the left cylinder at idle but would run fine when I got to about 1/3 throttle. Now I have to put the carbs and new cable on but it is too cold now to try and jet the thing. I have it back in the living room and hope to have it ready to go for the January bike show at the International Center. May not be running optimally but it should at least be able to sit there. :-)
