Electric fan installation without pushing through rad fins

#1 Post by Evans Ward » Wed Feb 07, 2018 1:20 pm

While my motor is out, I thought I'd readdress mounting the electric cooling fan again. I had one installed years ago but the push tie secure connections cost me a radiator with a leak directly from mounting. Credit given to Tim Steele (75rd350rider) for the suggestion of Adel clamps! The Adel clamps are 1.25" stainless steel units that a rubber backed. I mounted these on frame down tubes for a 4 corner approach. I also used plastic cable tie base holder mounts on the size of 23.5 x 16x 10mm securing them by a small screw/ nut at hole of clamp. For the upper left clamp, you can't use the rubber due to frame diameter there. Other mount points can utilize the rubber. I used a Spal plastic fan purchased used (that had NASCAR history!). Upper two mounts I used plastic cable ties, on the lower mounts, I used an automotive type transmission cooler kit long secure tie. The fan fits tightly on the surface of the rad. Will be using a manual type switch that clamps to the handlebar. I still need to wire it up but wanted to share this approach. Pics below:

This might be a culprit or did you check clearance between head and fan?
Usually its kind of tight in that area.

I checked it before pulling it Martin and it has clearance. :smt023

I made up a bracket and welded fan mounts to it for an R6 fan on my 421, I did that as I was very surprised by just how much power these small fans have, ie it could easily cut your fingers off if you ran it while holding it etc.

Interested to see how this goes Evan, it seems a lot less work than the bracket I made up.
