Toomey intake / air cleaner battery box question
I've been waiting around several weeks for Toomey Racing to deliver a Y-Pipe with air cleaner to replace two single clamp-on k&n's that I have now. I like the Toomey setup better. In my search to find an alternate source I think I may have found what they are selling us.
Does anyone here know if this part is the correct size to fit the airbox side of the RZ350 stock carbs?
Yamaha RD350 Air Cleaner Joint NOS RD250 Rubber Y-Boot CONNECTOR 360-14453-00 This part from Yamaha looks like the Y-Pipe.
The K&N RU-0880 is definitely the Original Toomey/K&N filter that came in my old Kit from back in '89 before they went to foam air cleaners.
Now I just need a piece of thin-wall pipe with the correct O.D. so the filter lip to boot isn't crushed by the clamp.
This combination isn't any less money but I can get the stuff right away at least.
Also looking for something to use as a battery box with the airbox gone. I really don't want to cut up the original air box. Does anyone besides Toomey make a battery box for the RZ350?

Re: Toomey intake / air cleaner battery box question
I have a used Toomey battery box if you want it . The Y boot is definitely a RD350 Yamaha part and is available as a repro on eBay . The base of the filter connecting to the Y is 74mm ( 2 7/8 '' ) OD .
Re: Toomey intake / air cleaner battery box question
The stock Yamaha RD350 intake fits, I got mine from a Yamaha dealer. I used one for years with a K&N filter and a piece of exhaust pipe in the inlet end to tighten the hose clamps against. You can't buy the large UNI filter with offset flange anywhere but Toomey, it is made for them to their specs. After using it for years I switched back to the stock air box (gutted) with a UNI filter and like it better. The only downside is ease of maintenance suffers, but once set up it's infrequent enough to not be an issue.
Jet size pretty much doubled with the Y-boot, maybe not a factor from single filters but IIRC I was at about 360 mains with SpecII pipes vs. 185's that were in the carbs when I bought it.

Thanks for the info + the offer on the Battery Box.Zedixe13 wrote:I have a used Toomey battery box if you want it . The Y boot is definitely a RD350 Yamaha part and is available as a repro on eBay . The base of the filter connecting to the Y is 74mm ( 2 7/8 '' ) OD .
I just found a used RZ airbox for $10 that I am going to cut the battery holder out of so that I can keep my original intact. If Toomey doesn't get their act together in the next couple weeks, I'll make arrangements with you to get your used one.

"Piece of exhaust pipe" That's perfect! Great idea.RuZty wrote:The stock Yamaha RD350 intake fits, I got mine from a Yamaha dealer. I liked the Y-Pipe with the single K&N better than the dual K&N or the Toomey Foam air cleaner by Uni. The Toomey Y-Pipe with a single K&N is slightly quieter from stand still up to 4000rpm. I didn't like the look of the dual K&N's and my bike felt like it revved quicker without the airbox.
I have one RZ with Toomey pipes and one with SpecII. The SpecII seems to rev quicker and blows right past 10,500 easily. The Toomey sounds a little better to me, feels faster off the bottom stays strong to about 10500 and kind of flattens out. It's easier to over-rev the SpecII bike and I find my self watching the tach more vs the Toomey bike.

If you use the Toomey air cleaner or eliminate your original airbox then you need something to hold the battery in place because the stock airbox assembly and battery carrier is all one piece. You can cut your stock airbox to make things work but the Toomey battery box is a nice clean aluminum part that bolts securely in place. It's a nice part that doesn't ever need to be replaced.

Re: Toomey intake / air cleaner battery box question
I would gladly trade you a cut up air filter housing for a stock airbox + $$ .....
