Well its on again, but with an added extra or 2.

Target 550 is attending Speed Week http://www.target550.com/

And Valerie Thompson will be attending the FIM World Speed Trials event that will be run after the DLRA speed week. http://www.valeriethompsonracing.com/

If you have ever considered attending, 2018 would be a good year to do it.

Im rebuilding my RGV and Salt Peter has his nearly ready to go. We are both shooting for the elusive 150 mph average over the flying 1 mile.

Dave

Hey Jon, my bikes finished and we have started packing. Ive gone back some more steps trying to find out why I keep detonating my left cylinder. The right side isnt far behind it. Ive put my old set of pipes on (Modified TYGA) as well as the original ignition. I hope to get a good run like that then fit the new pipes and tune the carbs, then fit the Ignitech ignition with my race advance curve with 5 deg taken off the max then if its still running hit it with the full advance and start leaning it out. If it survives that ill be happy as a pig in poo and will have lifted my current record in the Fuel class.

Once I get 150 mph out of the RGV it might be time to drag the RZ into the shed and look at a Big Bore/Stroker kit and have a go in the 500 class.

Im having a ride on my mates Bussa again, this time no rev limiter. Should do close to 180 mph. [smilie=yikes.gif]

Sounds good Dave, hope everything works out as planned this year :)

Ive ridden a 'busa at 150+ (closed road, officer) and it was solid as a rock, dunno what it'll be like on the surface you race on... hmm...

Sounds like fun in Oz, Dave. As always, have fun! Hopefully all will run great, and stay in one piece for you. Keep the rubber side down.

Back from Speed Week, the RGV is still running. I had 6 runs starting at a very rich 103 mph, wouldnt run on the mains type of rich. Then changed my pipes from the modified TYGA's to my home made Jolly Moto copies and a rejet and ended up doing a rather average 127 mph lifting my MPS/F 250 record from 114 mph. A far cry from the 140 mph that its done. The left cylinder was a bit lazy although the compression was the same as the right side so im not sure what the problem is. I did a pressure test on the motor after assembly and all tested OK. Ill strip it down and investigate. Its due for some loving so its time for a crank rebuild and some fresh plating on the barrels. Ive got a good starting tune for next year, only 11 months and 1 week to go.

I rode my mates Bussa again after he had done 2 150 mph + runs. I got to 164 MPH (8200 rpm in top) and had another tank slapper. This time I was ready for it and had a plan of attack. I moved my weight forward, no better so then I slid back on the seat, still no better. This time the rev limiter was set to 10500 so I gave it a hand full and it got slightly better but then I thought that even if it got better I still had to slow down so it was a matter of just very slowly rolling off the throttle and hanging on. It got down to around 140 mph and as went into normal bike mode.
After i returned the bike to my mate and told him of my ride he said that I must be doing something wrong and that he would have another ride. After his 171 mph run his first words were "I nearly Died" It did the same thing to him. This time it was caught on the front mounted video. Ill upload it and post a link when he gives me a copy.

We saw a couple of 300 + mph runs by Target 550 and the BUB 7 stream liners. Both had less than average weeks. Target 550 dropped a valve and then blew a clutch and the BUB 7 fell over at 300 + sliding for a mile or so on its side.

Wow what a report! Thanks so much Dave, feel like I was there. :)

The best news of all was that the RGV held together, the raising of the record is great news of course, but mostly im pleased that the bike didnt grenade.

The 'busa sounds a right handful. Do you think its the surface thats the issue? I cant believe anything you guys take up there has poor steering bearings or bad dampers etc.

Anyway, pleased you had a decent year mate.

The busa sounds like a handful. I trust you had fun.

The tank slapper, what is the rear suspension like? I'm wondering if running a stiffer rear setting might settle things down.

Hey Thanx Jon and Rory, the bussa has a strut on an extended swing arm. It has some ballast, 40 kg i think, added to the swing arm as well so I think that will have to go. The weight bias is towards the rear.
All the alignments were checked before this event and head stem bearings were checked and torqued down to factory specs. Head stem and swing arm pivot are at 90 deg.
The things behind the front forks are going as well as the blue nostrils.

My RGV in its natural environment.

Hey Jon, yep there is probably some in vehicle footage but that might take a while to be released.
I keep promising the RGV a new paint job but it still scrubs up ok so i will sort the motor first.

Not sure why anyone would get on a speed bike without a steering damper.

Very impressed with the level of testosterone and fortitude up in here. :smt023
