Anyone had this happen?

Anyone had this happen?
When I turn the signals on both turn on. No blinking.
Thoughts? I am not an electrically-inclined person.
Basically I have this to figure out, then finish bleeding the brakes, and my project is on the road. Bike runs fine, powervalves cycle, headlight works fine, dash lights seem to work fine. It seems that every time I finish one simple thing, a new more complex problem emerges...

Re: Anyone had this happen?
Did you use low current LED type indicators? Or smaller wattage bulbs? You MUST have the correct current draw or the flasher will not flash, takes a certain amount of current. If you lose one bulb, the flashers should stop flashing, you notice and start checking around and find the burned out bulb...

LEDs. I have used these before. They usually flash faster.
Thing is BOTH left and right are on. Same time. No blinking. All four signals light up regardless of which way I throw the switch.

Re: Anyone had this happen?
I notice that the dash turn indicator is a little dim, and slow to respond when the switch is thrown. If that helps.
Re: Anyone had this happen?
Sounds like a low wattage issue or a bad earth. The way the single turn signal bulb systems work is that they earth down thru the two sides of the dash bulb thru the side units, but they dont light as the voltage is so low. so if you fit low wattage bulbs or a wrong flasher then they will all come on. Ive had this with the OEM flasher and LEDS but only on the standard system when there is a bad earth. HTH.

how would I find a bad earth?
the grounds near the reg/rec and coil are fresh, ground down to the frame steel after powder coating.

Re: Anyone had this happen?
unplug all the turn signal connections, clean and reconnect them is a good start :)

Re: Anyone had this happen?
I'd start at the relay. Then the switch and it's connector. Could be a bent pin at the connector. Not much left after that if you're sure they are hooked up properly and the harness is good.
Re: Anyone had this happen?
The only place you can accidentally join these circuits is the switch, the instruments and the harness. Get a meter and verify continuity is correct at the switch when you operate it. Put regular bulbs in for troubleshooting so you can eliminate that variable and get a proper flash, it'll have nothing to do with them all been on at once, but why add confusion. Unplug the instrument panel if the switch appears to work correctly and see if that does it. Harness is least likely unless you've 'customized' it, and also the hardest to troubleshoot. If the switch checks out and it still lights them all with the instruments unplugged then start checking connectors and tracing wires. Good Luck!
Re: Anyone had this happen?
It's in the gauges. Unplugged the white gauge harness they come on one at a time now. Need. New relay, but knew they wouldn't flash with a stocker anyway.

Re: Anyone had this happen?
swapped the gauge harness quickly with another tach/therm/harness I had laying around. still works, so something is wrong in those wires.
thanks guys.

Re: Anyone had this happen?
Back to square one. Thought it was the gauge harness. Nope.
Swapped one out, with one I had spare, plugged in and had it working. Only thing I overlooked was that the new one did not have a bulb in the idiot light...
I swapped out another bar switch. No go.
I have a new working electronic relay.
The only way the signals will work L/R and not as hazard lights is if I unplug the idiot bulb. This was common to both gauge harnesses, different bulbs.
Ideas?
Anywhere else these wires can cross? Or is it possible I have two bad turn signal idiot bulb sockets?
How can I test this?

Re: Anyone had this happen?
Hey Noc.
The 85 RZ uses the same gauge cluster, so I checked my manual today.
I'm pretty sure their wiring diagram is f*cked, when it comes to the signal indicator bulb in the dash.
You can find the wiring diagram here.
http://www.rzrd500.com/phpBB3/viewtopic ... =85+wiring" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The drawing shows 2 wires going to the signal light on the dash.
1 wire is dark brown (this is power to the Left turn signal)
The other wire is dark green (this is power to the Right turn signal).
So, if you turn on the R signals, then power goes to the dash indicator on the brown wire.
Power then goes out of the dash indicator on the green wire, and then goes to the L signals, and continues on to Ground.
So, according to Yamaha's diagram, your signals are operating fine.
I read the troubleshooting guide in the book, and it wasn't useful.
However, I suspect it might be the Self Canceling Unit.
If you unplug it, the turn signals should operate normally. (Left, Off, Right),
If this works, (and you have a meter), let me know and I'll send you the instructions for testing the self canceling unit.
