Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
I remember Ken trying several combinations to get it stable. My suggestion is to use the top one first, then the bottom one. I don't think the middle one will provide enough voltage to drive the R1 tach.

Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
The end result if i remember correctly was my tach was screwed on my first set of gauges,, so i bought a 2000-2001 r1 gauge and hooked it up per instructions and it worked fine...as far as i remember..lol
I could not have figured out the electrical gremlins i first had with my project without the help of steveloomis,,so again a big thanks steve

Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
Just double checked my notes and the only color that shows up in my set up is y/b for tach? But i did not revise my notes for the 2000-2001 r1 gauges.. :(, but if it says w/g i would try that ..

Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
Just wanted to post to confirm that US speedometers can be converted from MPH to KPH by pressing the down and holding the two buttons on the dash simultaneously for a few seconds. J
Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
After years of 60+ hour weeks my life has come back to me and I have several years of unfinished projects to tackle. I wanted to get this functional so when I finish the front end swap I have nearly completed it will be ready to go. I know a number of the key players in this thread don't post any more but hopefully some of you have put some miles on this setup and can comment.
My gauges are US model year 2000 R1, they do switch to metric but the temp is fixed in deg F. I am using a a '98 upper harness and have it set up and working on the bench. I am using a Brembo rear caliper on an Aprilia RSV hanger with my RGV swingarm and wanted to use the Aprilia speed sensor to count rotor bolts. Using a speedo healer it all works and the speedo shows 5 km/h when spun by hand with a calculated setting, and the temp sensor works too.
The thing giving me trouble is the tach, afraid of damaging it I started with Smurph's HEI trick since I had one kicking around. The tach read the correct idle but the engine would not take any throttle at all. I disconnected it and fed the tach straight from the W/G of the ignition pickup as originally suggested and it worked properly and responded nicely but the tach is about 20% optimistic compared to the stock electronic tach. I would like to know what has worked for others over time to drive the tach without killing it. I checked the gray tach wire and like others it is showing about 170 volts.
The other thing I can't figure is the fuel and oil lights. The fuel light will stay off with a resistance to ground between 3.2k ohm and 44k ohm. Outside of that range the tach starts swinging diagnostic codes with the oil, fuel and high temp lights blinking. Same result for the oil sensor at much over 1.8k ohm, it stays off if grounded but there is no resistance value where it will just illuminate the light. I can't imagine the tach goes crazy on an R1 when your low fuel or oil light comes on. The tach does not swing to a set RPM like it should for diagnostic codes, it sweeps full scale (about 12500) and back to zero.
I have bought a low fuel level switch for a 2000 and will see how that works with it when it arrives. I would like to mount it on the RZ oil sender and connect the fuel warning to illuminate the oil light. This would also allow me to use the low fuel trip meter for oil level piece of mind.
Comments and experiences appreciated.
EDIT- I should add that I do have a Zeeltronic PCD10V if all else fails, but then I would need the Baker TSD to double the pulses. Always an option but I would like to keep it independent if possible.

Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
If I were you, I'd have a look for a genuine Koso RX2N or RX1N.
Those are painless to swich between units, you can get a speedo-cable-adaper and for some 200 bucks it's a good value.
Do not fall for 40$ Chinese copies. I had one on my table and you have much less & older settings which prevented proper usage on a RZ350.

That might be an option if I can't make this work to my satisfaction, I just looked and they have some retro looking units too that are just a round gauge with an LED speed readout and integral warning lights. These look interesting too, http://www.speedhut.com/gauge/GRM4-GPS- ... m-h-Metric" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ,I think RZResurection used one on his project.
Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
Dont give up on your R1 dash Ruz, there was a pic for the oil light wiring on here that nikfubar (RIP) did, if its not here let me know and i'll find it. The fuel... er, you have a fuel sender?
I plan to drive mine from the output sprocket, but you can drive it off anything with teeth and a speedohealer, and i planned to use the zeel to drive the tack and bought the baker atsd, but im also keen to hear if you find a solution.

Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
Hi Jon, I take it you didn't sell yours then. I've got the speedo working well, and hopefully using the Yamaha fuel sender for the oil will sort that out. I get Nicks wiring for the oil light, just a NO relay to invert the output, but mine won't leave just the oil light on, it does funky blinking and needle wagging when the oil wire is not grounded, same as it does without fuel level hooked up. I'll play around with the resistor divider today and try the grey tach wire to see how that compares to the stock one. I'm not crazy about the tach reading 20% high like it did running on the W/G pickup coil wire, so maybe that will resolve it. Speedo and everything else works fine. The speedohealer has a test function which lets you select from several discrete outputs. Since we have to report our vehicle mileage every year when we renew our registration I would prefer it to be the same as the bike, as such it is on the bench right now racking up a kilometre every 12 seconds.
Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
I was going to mention Jon W because I thought I remember him doing this conversion. But he has piped in and hopefully can help.
Did you check vespaman’s website?
http://www.scooterhelp.com/RZ_help/upgr ... es.r1.html
His bike for sale has this conversion.
I bought one of these R1 clusters but have chosen not to put it on at this point. Seems like a lot of effort but if you can get it done and dialed in I am sure it is a good unit. Someday mine will be for sale if I end up not using it.
I chose this for my RZ500 and it works fantastic. I think I'm going to make KOSO my standard nonstock cluster.
Good luck

Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
Thanks Ken, I bought all of this stuff, the gauge, harness and speedo healer back closer to the beginning of this thread and the only aftermarket gauges at the time that looked any good were really pricey (i.e. SPA Designs). I could probably get half way to a KOSO selling the stuff I have, but since I finally have time to get on with all my half started projects I'll plug away at it for now. That's 2 good references for the KOSO, and I think silverstrom used on on his black bike too, and it's quite similar to the '02-03 R1, which I like.
I just looked on their website, does the perimeter of the tach light up with the needle?

Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
Yep I still have mine, had a few people interested but sold something else so the need for cash was minimised and no one stepped up with the cash at the time anyway, so its all still here, which is cool. Id love to use it really as I liked this dash on my 01 R1 so its fitting i use it.
Loving the idea youre racking up miles on the bench. too funny.
Ive used a few koso products and they work well, I like their dashs and im sure they work well, so no disrespect to them, but the R1 OEM unit is much nicer build is all. Once working they are a really good unit.

Yes the perimeter of the KOSO tach lights up, and then when you let off the lights stay lit for a brief moment showing what your highest RPM was.
Also the back lighting has a range of colors to select from. (You could match the color all of the LED accent lighting you put all over your bike.)
The thing has all kinds of fancy pants settings and memory stuff that I will never use, but like I said it works quite well.
And what Jon said too, that R1 unit seems to be extremely robust and once set up I'm sure will be fantastic.

Re: 2001 R1 Speedometer HOWTO
A bit more progress on this, I was getting frustrated with the thing going into "alarm mode" blinking the lights and sweeping the tach, it wasn't following any of the diagnostic code patterns in the R1 manual, which it shouldn't anyway because they probably come from the ECU. The meter will warn of fuel light faults by blinking the fuel light 8 times in a row, which means either a short or over 44k resistance. I am using a 12V battery charger for power and had it set on 2amp trickle charge, when I put it on the 10 amp setting everything worked fine. I am also not convinced that the R1 tach is wrong, I need to verify the actual RPM with a diagnostic tach that runs off the coil or a plug inductive pickup.
I got the fuel light working and found the values that make it come on and clear, and also start the low fuel trip meter so I should be able to hook this up to the oil sender instead so I know how far until my oil is gone.
