Key switch wiring question

#1 Post by justind97 » Fri Mar 25, 2016 9:11 am

I have 83/84 harness (I think) the kill switch wires are black and black w/ white. When I look on the diagram it says they should be red.

In any case, I have what I believe to be a 86+ switch. It has a red plug with an additional black/white wire sticking out.

My harness does not have anywhere to accept said wire. Is it required?

TIA!

The 83/84 Ignition Switch has 6 wires coming out of it.
ALL 6 wires go to a white 6 Pin connector.

The 86+ Ignition Switch also has 6 wires coming out of it.
But only 5 of the wires go to a Red 6 Pin connector.

The single Black/White wire from the 86+ Ignition Switch needs to be connected to the Black/White wire in the Main harness.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong,
but I'm pretty sure that if the Black/White wire is Not connected, then you won't be able to shut the bike off using the key.

Pretty sure youre right Steve.

OP, if you look thru the wiring diagrams you should be able to trace the switch wire colours, and the connections and work out what is happening and what will and wont work. Its easy once you get started.

Thanks guys!! After looking at it some more, I had the brilliant idea of making the least intrusive wiring fix possible.
Since you guys mentioned the old key switch had the black and white wire integrated into the plug and said key switch literally fell apart, I figured I might as well remove the wire (with pin!) and make it work. So I pulled the blade from the old switch, spliced the wire and put a female end on it. Bob's your uncle!
