#1 Post by neilstar » Sun Sep 18, 2016 4:44 am

hello, hopefully someone can help me solve these electrical issues, thank you in advance

1981 Yamaha rd350lc

new battery fully charged, doesn't seem to be charging whilst bike running,

turn ignition on and nothing, use to light up red and green dash light

bike will start and run no probs, once started green and red dashlight on

headlight flickers all over the place, while revving,

indicators work sometimes, mainly with high beam on,

indicators work if I hold front brake on

any help would be much appreciated

cheers Neil

I would check the fuze box. The stock fuze clips lose tension or break causing problems like you describe. My bike had some of the same problems all solved when I replaced the fuze box with blade fuzes.

go through and waggle[1] every connection, especially inside the headlight.

1 - Its like a wiggle, only more manly. :D

thanks all, will try again tonight,

have no power when turn on ignition, but bike starts and runs fine,

done lots of wiggling,

only earth I know of is the one directly behind ignition coil?
should there be any others anywhere

what is the spare loose black connection next to the indicator flasher unit, next to battery
unsure what that is for,

thanks again Neil

Without knowledge of how much you like your Bike Or how much work you are willing to put into it?
Ideal would be to 'Remove' the entire wiring harness from the bike and lay it out on a sheet of Plywood.
Anchoring all the connectors so they stay put.
Then strip All the tape wrap.. exposing All the contained wires.
Good chance you will find Burnt Black wires . Yama had (has?) a years long Bad habit of Economising on ground circuits.
Very often such a strip down shows the effects. . Fix those and check each wire for continuity..
Yess.. All a bit of a Pain. But it eliminates further wiring problems.
Also add a decent sized Black wire link direct from Battery Negative to the Frame.
