Dead stator? 1990 Rz350
Today I noticed that my battery suddenly was flat when I was leaving work. odd
Got home, checked the battery, only has 8 volts. it goes. upto 12.5 when running at 5k Rpm.
I swapped in a known good battery from my Rd400, has a standing voltage of 12.6-12.8 but stays at 12.5 when running.
I have tested the regulator/rectifier with my ohm meter, current only flows one way through each white wire when holding one lead on the red wire like it should.
Now the stator is suspect. I only get one reading of 001 between 2 white wires, but infinite with the others, any which way I try. leads swapped around too.
Now i get the same infinite if i swap the leads around. I don't think this should matter though.
I'm just looking for a second opinion. Is the stator toast?
The bike still runs fine but the lights are dim at idle
Thanks for your time

Check all connections where the wires come out the back of the connector block. I have had a wire down to the last few strands cause some funky things to happen.

That's a pretty good write up there, I will try those tests tomorrow and see what happens

The 3 white wires are for creating the 12V to charge the bat and run the lights.
If one of them is faulty you'd have what you describe, i.e. bike runs, but no 12V supply (nominal value is 0.6 ohm)
In that case your stator needs to be replaced.
In case you talked about the source coil:
1) Set your meter to 200 ohms, not 2k
2) Measure red, green, brown that's the source coil.
You have to measure 3 different combinations. If one branch of the coil is faulty, you should read 2 infinite values and one that is close to spec (either around 5 ohms or something between 130 and 230 ohm)
If it really is the source coil, my default advice is to get a DC CDI as this doesn't require the source coils.
Prices are in the 200 Eur region which is around double that you'd spend on a used stator or on a rewinding. In exchange you get around plus 5 hp even on stock engines - tuned ones benefit even more.

Hey I measured the source coil wires going into the stator.
red and green - infinite
brown and green - infinite
brown and red - 5.9
i have taken pictures of the source coil wires and also the 3 white wires again

For the three white cables that's the confirmation that you'd need a new stator or a rewind.
For red/green/brown I may have to add to my advise on using the 200 ohm range.
If the value is higher than the range (200 in this case), some meters show "infinite" which can lead to false conclusion.
Repeat the measurement with the 2k range and I'm pretty sure it will not show infinite (otherwise your bike wouldn't run ...)
If you need to measure more often, you may invest some 40 bucks in a meter that has an auto-range function.

Re: Dead stator? 1990 Rz350
I'll have to get it rewound forsure.
I went over to my buddys place to compare readings on his 1990 Rz350 basket case/project
and here is what I got
I had gotten infinite on my bike for these wires
I had 5.9 on mine
I had infinite
Had 0.9 on mine
This was infinite on mine
Does anyone know of a good place in Canada I can send it to get rewound?
Thanks

No one local to Pickering.
There is Earl (Proformance Cycle 519 942 2082, up near Orangeville), but he hand winds them... with varying results.
Rick's electric is a better bet.
I probably have a used one. I am in Omemee, just north east of Pickering.

RM stator is out of Canada around the Montreal area I believe. I have dealt with him before and the customer service was good. He can rewind coils but you should be able to find someone local to do it like an alternator/generator repair shop.

Re: Dead stator? 1990 Rz350
Thanks for pointing me to RmStator, I called them and they said its $250 to rewind it.
I'm going to take it off the bike today and ship it out.
I didn't want to take a chance with a used one because this bike is my daily ride and I ride 10,000 km+ per year.
As always thanks for the help
