No spark

#1 Post by fatpenguin86 » Sun Jan 22, 2017 10:16 pm

So i just bought a 73 rd 350 and a 79 rd400. Neither are running. I am working on the 400 first but have no spark. First i replaced the battery. Bikes had been sitting. Second, i tested continuity. Found a draw. This bike had all kinds of wiring concerns sonditched everything except igniton for now. By passed the kill switch because i only need spark right now. The coils ohm out. The rectifier has continuity with all three white wires. I get continuity to the coils and regulator. But i get no voltage directly from the stator, when kicking it over. The points look new. How do i know if i need a new stator? I am fairly certain everything else is okay. And lastly, if i do need a stator, should i switch to cdi. Thanks for the help guys. I searched the forum but if this was posted i missed it.

You are unlikely to find that info. specifically on the RD models here. This forum is for the Liquid Cooled versions of those bikes.

At least for the RZ there are quite clear resistances to determine the condition of the stator. You may want to look for these for the AC bikes.

Welcome to the forum.

I suspect you would have more luck getting your question answered over on 2 stroke world though.

I would recommend the swap to cdi. It will save you a load of grief.

That system should run without stator assistance. So no, the stator can't be the cause.
If everything is ok, you have a spark. Stating everything is ok and having no spark counts as an alternative fact.

Switching to CDI requires a new CDI, new coils, a trigger device (usually a toothed wheel and a VR sensor) and a lot of wiring.
Powerdynamo offers "plug and play" kits like this:

If you're getting power through the coil to the breaker points and the points are opening but still no spark your condenser is probably bad

Good diagnose for that: You'd see sparks at the point contacts during kicking when there's no capacitor parallel to the points.
