blinker staying on

#1 Post by rdrob » Sat Jun 10, 2017 1:43 am

Hi hoping someone can shed some light on my problem as electrical is not something I know much about.

I have nearly finished rebuilding my bike (rd250lc) thought time to try out the electrics everything is running fine except the blinkers they blink ok but as soon as I turn the headlight on they stop blinking
turn the headlight off and they start blinking again?

I did think maybe the battery was shagged as it came with the bike bought another still no good but tried another from one of my other bikes that is a known good battery still same problem.

I have pulled all the connectors apart some of the bullet connectors I tightened up felt a bit loose then plugged them back in also checked the earth.

Any suggestions at this stage would be great as I'm really not sure where I should start looking?

Thanks Rob

Sounds like low battery voltage to me. See if they work when you start it.

More than likely with the engine running the flasher will work, at least that is the case with my RZ.

The blinkers work on/off/on by a bi-metalic piece that heats up during contact and cools off as soon as it disconnects, to start the cycle again. When the lamps to stay on, it is an indication that the bi-metalic piece is not heating enough (power draw not enough) to the point of popping out of contact. This usually happens when one lamp is burnt.

Anything that reduces the current circulating through the bimetalic piece is suspect:
battery voltage, lamp amperage incorrect or burnt, or excessive resistance at the switch or at the lamp sockets, .

If the battery voltage has been discarded, I would check the other two.

If all fails, replace the blinker, which can go defective as well.

I would check all your grounds. These bikes are old. Every ground should be removed and cleaned up, at least every couple of years to keep the circuit connections "fresh".

Thans guys I fitted the exhuasts today and fired the bike up first time since restoring the bike.

So started the bike and checked the blinkers with the bike running headlights on and the blinkers worked
fine so maybe the voltage is down?

Oh I should of mentioned the blinkers & switch are NOS but doesn't mean they can't be faulty I suppose.

I will check the ground again and the other things out.

Thanks for the imput

Low voltage will cause turn signal to not blink as the flasher relay requires 12V
I just found a WAY less expensive than OEM flasher relay. Novita flasher #550, about $10
Though it is round & silver.
