85 Canadian Electronic Tach Wiring

#1 Post by DRC » Sun Jul 02, 2017 2:09 pm

I have an Canadian 85 frame and gauge cluster that I'm going to use on my Athena build (I thought it was an 84 until i pulled it out of the basement)

The motor and wiring harness will be from a Canadian 83.

I would like to use the Electronic Tach in the 85 gauge cluster and need to splice it into the 83 harness. From what I can remember...

- The Grey wire from the tach was spliced into the orange wire going to the coil - I believe the 86 and later may have taken the signal from the CDI

- The Black wire was the ground

- The Brown wire was the power that also supplied power to the temperature gauge.

Is someone able to confirm this? Do does anyone have a clear scan of the 85 wiring diagram.

Thanks in Advance...

In all years the electronic tachs are not using the orange wire in the CDI (which goes to HT coil primary). They all connect to the black-yellow between CDI and PV controller.
So the right scheme is
- black => ground
- brown => + 12V
- grey => black-yellow
