...or just use quality 'fine line' tape to get a nice edge and mask to there.

Tape is the key, and squeegee it down real good. If you respray the same base color on top, then the stripe color....your going to have more build up of paint on the edge. Meaning you will need more clear to level it out. Not a good way to do it ....maybe for house paint, but not automotive. Light coats of paint and taking time to get it covered is the best way, letting it dry just a bit each coat....with a few heavy coats after the edge is completely covered. Then a quick light last coat if your using metallic to keep metallic even throughout.....

Almost done....

Fairing is all smoothed out, cracks fixed, and primed...
taking way too long....but it's winter and I can't ride it anyway....

Either way, it will be all ready for the sun on it's 30th birthday :smt041

Looking very nice. I am good with mechanical, but I have rarely ever had any paint project turn out. I would love to have your paint skills.

Im still looking at the kit to do this painting lark... I need a half decent water/oil trap for sensible money and a gun, what do you suggest anything to avoid?

Off the top of my head, I would say Binks, or Devilbiss....

Harbor freight should have a water trap for your airline that would work and be cheap....I haven't used one at home ever. But most of the stuff I paint, I take to work and do. I work in a paint shop, so It's already set up for painting needs.
I have a pretty big compressor at home...(3 stage)...but you really don't need that much air pressure to paint. I have always had to use High quality guns, so I'm not sure what entry level guns are out there that are good. (company supplies all the equipment nowadays....)

This is what I do everyday for the past 11+ years with the company I'm at now...(NEWMAR) with about 20+ years of custom painting vans and RV's before here...

To smooth the paint edge even more for smoother clear, we use blades on the edges, to shave off the excess paint buildup from the tape edge.
This does take a bit of practice, but definitely makes a difference on final finish.

My next target, one I've had in my sights several times in the last 30 years, is a RZ/RZV500.... With all the two strokes I have,I know I won't be satisfied until I finally have one as my own.
