Brake reservoir

#1 Post by LC Cnd » Sat Apr 27, 2019 9:15 pm

It was suggested that I use a metal etching primer before repainting the reservoir lid black. Is that advisable?

dont think it'd make any difference to brake fluid once its gets on it, but its alloy so it can help with adhesion. Ive painted these with normal satin black with no primer, with primer and also powder coated them. Powder lasts the longest.

A media blaster & VHT paint.

Never used a primer on aluminum with the above paint, ever. Never had adhesion issues. With that said, brake fluid will give any paint a bad day at the office, no matter the prep.

Giving it a rough surface is key.

I've been using the Gun Kote and it holds up well. 120 grit blast, spray, bake on. Impervious to everything.

Caliper paint might be another good option.

There should never be any brake fluid on the paint with maintained brake components.

The problem is that restored old systems there can be fluid creep up around the seal (old seal, pockmarked alloy edge etc) and all your good work can then look shit in a few years, thats all i was saying, its shouldnt be slopping out lol

Caliper paint is really tough stuff and holds up well. Dust it on and it drys quickly.

Thx. Hmm out of Texas. I'll be digging to see if they have a distributor here in Canada. Note there paints are good for 'blueing" guns. Have to be tough for that application.

Thx Ruzty. Thinking it would be good for the frame also - perhaps better option than powder coating because it can be reapplied.

The caliper paint is durable stuff but be careful on frame as it tends to chip easier. Adhesion is less good than most epoxy paints. PJ1 is great and supposed to be chemical and fluid resistant once baked. Overall you will find few paints that will hold up to brake fluid but i've not had the issue described above about seepage. I do find it is possible to leak fluid on the paint during re-assembly but usually holds up well if cleaned quickly. I think you are likely overpaying for that paint at that price.

What is gun kote? Why do we not use it?

Powder can also be touched up and reapplied without removal of coating despite what people seem to think. I've done it quite a few times.

No etching primer is required.
