Twin headlamp fairing for RZ350?

#1 Post by smurph » Sat May 07, 2005 12:06 am

Does anyone know how I can get my hands on the Brazilian made RZ350 twin headlamp fairing here in the USA?

I have been sweet on the twin lamp look ever since my 87 FZ600. :)

Thanks,
Steve

I've been in touch with a place in Florida that makes them--He gets back pretty quickly, he can send pics too, so tell him what you are looking for and ask for pics and pricing! Pricing isnt too bad for something made to fit, he sells a kit with the headlights too!

aleman77@aol.com

Almost forgot to add--he sells some pretty cool looking other parts like an RZ front fender that looks quite different than stock, and a rear hugger for the RZ. Looks pretty cool. Also does solo seats and other stock looking stuff.

Cant speak to quality, never used them, just passing along information! Let us know if anyone here uses them, or has used them... not sure what they are called, just have the email addy!

FZ is the same unit isnt it?

I had one of the R models in the uk... always looked 'heavy' to me...

[smilie=winner_first_h4h.gif] New post ressurection record! [smilie=winner_first_h4h.gif]

I've got an FZR600 upper in the garage, I think if you got the gauge and fairing mounts it would bolt on okay, but the side panels would need rework as the FZR has a longer lower edge.

Ya, I've been digging deep with my reading here. I've always liked the twin lights and needed to know what, where, when. Thanks guys!

Guys in the UK will have some top fairings and the rest of the gubbins (tec'nical term) like lights, bracket, infil panels, remote choke etc. to make it work on the F1/2 models. But... well... I owned and loved my R... but... it was a bit top heavy looking... just saying...

I agree, the twin lights always looked better.

When I looked into it I was told the early '90s FZ CDN was a simple swap:

- the fairing support frame should bolt right on

- the RZ instruments are the same

- the screen, fairing, lights and mirrors all have to come from an FZ

Let us know how it goes. I'm still itching to make the swap when I get the time.

Digging this one up again, I found the rest of the FZ600 body work for a decent price and offered it up to the RZ.
To clear up some misconceptions, I don't think the Brazilian RD350R is common to the FZ. If you look at side views the side panel starts at the front edge of the forks, same as the other full fairing versions. The FZ has a bottom edge about 2 inches longer than the RZ and it is all at the front, from the headlights it drops sooner into the side panel. None of the other panels on the RD350R look remotely like FZ parts.
The RZ instruments will probably fit the FZ gauge cluster but the RZ cluster will not fit the FZ birdcage, nowhere near. Since I will be using an R1 dash it isn't an issue.
The FZ birdcage bolts on tho the full fairing RZ frame but it might also turn your upper brake line into a steering hard stop (my braided stainless line hits, easy fix)
The lowers are open on the bottom on the FZ and do not even meet on the RZ, there is interference with pipes, side stand and kickstart. Judicious trimming of the rear part would get it inboard a couple of inches per side to the point that you could make a flat piece to bridge the two sides, but you would still have a big hole on each side where the FZ crankcase covers would be.
Since one of the lowers I got was missing the back piece I decided to do some surgery to see what it would look like if I spliced the FZ and RZ lowers together. I think this actually has some promise;

Keep in mind this was a fairly quick mockup and the lower panels currently overlap. We'll see how it ends up. If you are a giant (pay attention Rory) you might have interference issues with the back edge. I'm 6'1' and depending on how I sit my knees just brush it.

I think that looks great. May look even better with the F2 back end. The overlap on the tank is maybe a bit odd looking but overall I think it looks much better than even the stock setup...

Thanks Evan. Personally I think the F1 tail is one of the things that makes this bike iconic, I prefer it to the F2. I've asked Grumpy for a quote on a solo seat to go on it too. If it works out I might pull a mould off it.
