California fuel tank and cap

#1 Post by kpke » Wed Jan 14, 2015 1:44 am

Does anyone know the full story on the California only tank and cap?

The tank has a breather of some sort on the bottom and the cap is "special" California only.

The tube that comes off of the tank breather goes to the charcoal canister in stock configuration. I think these "special" parts were only on the late model California only bike.

On my other Cal bike I have tie wrapped a piece of foam on to the end of the tube and it has always worked fine.

I would like to change the cap parts from the plastic cap to the aluminum one.

Will the cap work properly when the parts are transferred over?

Is there a way to convert the tank to a normal tank? Just cap off the breather or the breather hole?

Its just emissions junk i think and vents the tank to a canister instead of direct to the atmosphere, should work fine with the new cap i would think.

Is this why Rogers tank has that lil baffle tank on his yellow test bike?

partly... i think that was a very USA thing for saying 'this bike takes unleaded' and loves the environment. Rogers bike drinks like wino on a cold Sunday arvo and barks like a dog trying to eat the postman, probably not very Cali friendly at all really LOL

All the US RZs had the baffle in the tank. That was around the time here where leaded pump gas was being phased out. The unleaded pump nozzle was smaller than the premium unleaded nozzle at the time and was the only nozzle that would fit. Now here in the states, nozzles are all the same size and any will fit.

yep, said better than I did. In the UK we had the same thing in some cars for a while.

What is in the tank itself to use up over a gallon of gas capacity? I have read that the CA RZ only has a 3.5 gallon tank.

These fuel tanks are HUGE for a small bike.
Calif tanks are 4.8 US gallons.
48 state tanks are 5.3 US gallons

I don't think 3.5 gallons of gas is huge for a two stroke twin street bike. I think if I had the full 5 gallons of use it would be ok. I still don't know what's in there to take up that much extra volume. I have only found one reference on a German website listing emission controls eliminating 1.5 gallons of gas space.

I guess I am going to have to empty the tank and refill to see what it will really take. I agree, 5 gallons is plenty for a small bike. Thanks for the info.
