Just how bad can the inside of a 'sound tank' actually be?

Re: Just how bad can the inside of a 'sound tank' actually b
$700-$800 Canadian for aluminum would be about right. Plastic about $300.

Re: Just how bad can the inside of a 'sound tank' actually b
Best refinish that tank, and use it as a plug/mould for a fibreglass tank.
Re: Just how bad can the inside of a 'sound tank' actually b
fibreglass is pointless with ethenol in fuels these days... plastic would be much better or ally/steel.

I should add, if anyone wants the tank in the pics feel free to cross my hand with a lowish amount of silver when you collect it and its yours... Failing that I will use the lower half for something custom...

Well with the correct chemistry, (not polyester... not epoxy), but Vinyl-Ester resin such as the correct grade of Derakane I think we'd find something that would work. Opinions are divided actually, but anyway, we don't need to worry too much here in beautiful Oz, -plenty of ethanol-free fuels available in all gas stations eh?
(If I lived up in tinseltown I'd be over with a few bob for the tank!)

No worries Jools, youd be welcome if you came with a case of cheap beer for it and we drank em while talking shite :D
As for tanks... Im a bit over the tank thing, no one ever seems to have anything positive to say in the threads about em, and while i was quite excited to do something about that a while back, ive been beaten down and joined the masses and have also become a negative Norbert now too it seems. ahh well, im more than happy if someone does do something and Id love tanks for RZs and LCs please!

Well mate, there's something I just love about the shape of those Pre PV tanks, I wish my RZ had one shaped like it.
Hah! -always got CHEAP beer available-(although my personal weakness is chateau cardboard blanc), and I'm sure we could shoot plenty of entertaining crap!)
A few years ago I would have jumped at the chance to do a mould of that tank, but I'm afraid too many years of smoking and breathing resin & 2k fumes have left me needing surgery!
Never mind, as long as I can ride the little RZ all is cool with the World!

Re: Just how bad can the inside of a 'sound tank' actually b
I see the benefit of plastic, but dont think the market would be there. Same with aluminum.wolfman wrote:What would you be willing to pay for a blow molded factory looking tank ?
What would you pay for an aluminum factory looking tank ?
What would you pay for a modern, ( helmet relief, modern filler ) tank that would bolt up ?
$700-$800 U.S. ?
Stock tanks w no damage are rare as hens teeth so a replica of the stock tank with a flush filler, or even stock I think. is would be where yo'ud see a potential market. Most would be looking for a restoration so a stock filler would probably be the safe bet. Although Id prefer a flush 86 & up style. Id guess between $800-$1000 youd be able to sell all you make. But most buyers are still looking at $500-$700 to have it painted & striped, So its questionable ? Prices are going up fast on these old bikes a few years ago this would have sounded crazy. Theres a NOS tank on E BAY asking 2k with a blemish. Would I pay that..not likley. Reason is I can buy any one of a dozen good condition 80s or 90s superbikes for 2-3 k all day long on Craigslist..but if you need a tank..what are you going to do ?
This was listed for $200.00 someone bought it,must have insane metal work skills.

one mans trash is another mans treasure.
the true question is, where is the value of these bikes going ?
they're not commanding prices of kr1's, nsr's or tzr's . yet !
gotta love thread drift .

Supply & demand far more 350s out there, and frankly the 250s are the greatest 2 stroke bikes ever, they even trump 500s in my book anyday. But considering I paid like $2500.00 for my 1st RZ brand new, todays prices are good.
Still at this time to do a "true full" restoration on most any 250,350 or 500 is a money losing proposition in most cases. Your looking at 10-14 k for most250/350s & a easy 15-20k on a 500 and close to 30k for a top shelf 500 YZR replika. Im talking concours level restorationsor builds, not most average bikes. Prices are all over the place .

Re: Just how bad can the inside of a 'sound tank' actually b
QV RZ, you missed the line 'in the USA/Canada'. In other countries its different, and we're International here so we should cover that for those reading this later outside North America etc. In the UK and Aus we are now seeing climbing prices for RZs and you can restore one and see most (if not all) of your money back, a few years ago it was like the USA is now, but it stabilised quickly once it started. In Aus we had a small number of bikes and once people started buying a few to do up the (nice) parts dried up fast, then people started snapping up whole bikes, then more forum exposure and 'wumph' it all went up fast... The UK was probably the first to see prices rise and its considering how vehicle values are usually low in the UK compared to Aus, the quickly added value to the LC, then the ypvs models and parts went up with that excitement, the forums drove a lot of that but the magazines like PS lauded the RDLC models and others. For a while when I wondered if the whole thing was over in the UK as everything levelled off but in the past 12mths the prices seem to be going up for projects and restorations, but modified bikes are still great value. In Japan... Its not very easy to find an old Yamaha now it seems, they got snapped up and exported but those that exist and are nice seem to be prized highly, as they should be, tho prices are less than some places. Prices in the EU are still keen enough that people still export them to the uk, mostly from Germany, so i determine prices must be lower there, although they are all usually projects, although runners. HTH.

Re: Just how bad can the inside of a 'sound tank' actually b
For completeness I felt I should add this photo and some info here:
Good tanks are now available out of the UK and also Japan, where the main parts supply for LCs is of course. I suspect they are not made in the UK or Japan but probably elsewhere in Asia, yet they are very good. They are die stamped and seam welded like the OEMs and come in white primer with an oil coating on the inside. These are faithful reproductions, unlike anything that has been made before. FYI the guide prices are about GBP 400 shipped to Australia, maybe a bit less to USA/Canada and you can shop around as suppliers like Hi Level supply these to a few places in the UK now, and some Japanese sellers have these on ebay too. I wont say whom, as that list will grow / change over time i suspect and this will be out of date.
And before the RZ boys ask... AFAIK There is no ETA for a 'new' RZ tank, but I think its obvious that whoever did these will be thinking along those lines.
