84 RZ 350 gas cap

#1 Post by 75RD350rider » Wed Dec 30, 2015 8:29 pm

I have found that if I fill the tank anywhere near full that it results in a fuel spill all over the tank during even normal takeoffs and a big spill if the front wheel happens to become airborne. I took the what appears to be undamaged rubber seal off, cleaned it and the cap thoroughly and reassembled. No change. Still leaks with fuel level an inch below the part that hangs down inside the tank. HVC sells new locking caps with keys $34 shipped. I am leaning towards that to see if it will cure the problem...Is this a common problem? thoughts?

Are there tabs on the inside lip of that tank the cap rotates into? I would be expecting the cap is not fitting tight enough and allowing spills. I had not had issues in the past and the caps usually fit quite tight.

My N1 (same tank as 84) had a new oem tank on it when i bought,it wouldve been no more than 2 yro.
First thing i did i fitted brand new oem petcock & cap leaked. Tried tweaking tabs down a touch, cap was pretty tight to fit & still leaked lol.
Im thinking its like a preasure release thing to allow it to breathe??? Thinking this because the f2 tank, the cap on that tank leaks too, found this out with brand new cap,but Yamaha built in a drain tube.......just idle observations,im prolly totally wrong lol.

My '85 has the original tank, cap and gasket. It will only leak if I fill it right up into the filler neck on a cool day and let it warm up. The trapped air expands and pushes it past the seal. I have only been stupid enough to do this once.

New gas cap from HVC fixed it.

It was worth it to stop the leak.... I think it was $30 shipped.
