RZ250 F1 solid or pearl white

#1 Post by Galant2NZ » Mon Aug 29, 2016 10:10 pm

I'm in need of a little help with the white used on the 84/85 RZ F1 white/red speed block. The color codes don't mean anything to my local supplier, I'm going to use PPG Deltron piant as I did for my TZR which was a 3 stage white pearl.
The problem is I need to know if it is a solid color or is there a pearl in it? Can't tell with the parts I have as over the years they've been repainted by previous owners so original paint gone.
Cheers

Fairly certain it is a pearl like the TZR but someone else can confirm. The 85 certainly was. The paint codes have no meaning from what I could find either. Had to eyeball if for the pearl red which was also a 3-stage on the 85. The straight white will be more striking but not original.

I went through this with the spray painter(runs a repair business) who has done a few bikes for me including a
rd400Daytona and a rd350lc.
We ended up using a Ford Festiva(in Australia) white which is not pearl.
He actually warned me about white pearl as it can look a bit beige in the wrong light.

It's costly doing pearl's as there are about 10 coats that go on to get the results.

Well I've carfully sanded a section down to the original clear coat of a tank I have then cut and polished, if there is a pearl it's very subtle. I will take it to the paint supplier tomorrow and see how things go. I will mention the Festiva white if he thinks it's a solid color.
Yes I know the pearl is a slow process, I have painted a few cars in the past both solid and metallic but never a pearl so was very stressed while painting the TZR but she came up a treat and looks so good just not sure I need that stress again as I have 2 RZ's to do.

That TZR250 looks really good!
I raced one back in the day and they are a lovely bit of kit. :smt003

Hi, yeah lots of fun to ride, she was in a pretty bad state when I found her broken engine, missing and broken fairings. Was my first real 2 wheel restoration project took me about 6 months.
She only comes out if the weathers good and a good ride is a dam good way to keep me motivated to do the 2 RZ's.

If it is a pearl like the Rd400 daytona

then toyota 051 is the code for the daytona there is a subaru code that is very similar used on very recent wrx

Ok dropped off the tank and he's saying its a solid color which I thought as much after looking at it in the sun so he's going to match it, also gave him a sample of the red vinyl I'm going to cut the decals from so he can match that as well.

Hi, what I did was match some sign vinyl to the original red decals then dropped a sample of that along with a fuel tank for the white which the paint supplier matched for me. May not be perfect but pretty close and I'm more than happy with it.
