Its interesting, Ive always found the older colours to be more cream than bright white, certainly that was the case with my XT. But I always wondered if that was some kind of fading or if they really were more off white than we remember, they do look better when not painted like a fridge tho lol

Interesting indeed Jon because going through the swatches, bout a 100 in ring, I noted that the tank colour did have a cream or pearl hue to it. The newer white were clearly more stark - blueishness tint to them imo. Fridge enamel is tough though according to Bare. I can testify he's correct on (black) on that account. Hmm... Marsbar n' the fridge - next project.

yeah i think its a creamyness as it not a pearl. so question is, was it there when new?

Cool that youve gone for an olderschool colourway with this, im keen to hear your results as I (and 2 mates) need theirs done in the next few months.

Supposed to attend another auto paint shop tomorrow with another spectroscope to obtain a second opinion. My bud there advised he would create a metal swatch, after the spect shot was complete, for compare it to the tank once dry - time permitting. Prepped the test spot with a light polishing compound before analyzing for the first test. Problably use the same spot. I'm surprised no one has already done this since this form does have some skilled painters aboard - your effort so far being the exception minus unfortunate bit bout the paint codes. Did note a thread, on LC Crazy, re clean white colour; however, the bloke(s) didn't advertise their code findings. Not sure if it was a propritory issue.

Today's test differed as the spectrograph produced a Lotus (Elsie ironically) white as the closest match - could not produce the swatch because the shop did not have all the tints in Cromax (Dupont). The only way to see if the colour matches is to buy pints of the colours. Marsbar is beginning to look more affordable.

I think i can help here with this decision on what shade will be the right one.
For years i painted and fixed brand new cars and bikes that were damaged or chipped in shipping to the dealers to be sold. It was not uncommon for a colour to be quite different with the same paint code week to week during manufacturing so much so that a fender might look unmatched on brand new car just because it was painted the month before it was put on the car and then i would have to do a colour spray out at different tints to match the rest of the vehicle. I will say it was even more common with motorcycles because many fenders would be damaged moving around in the show room and a new one ordered and the paint match would be off with the same paint code. So in my opinion pick the shade you like the most and avoid colour Rite and RS paints( internet paint companies). Get the cans made fresh at a reputable auto paint dealer.
My Favourites in order of the manufacturers you listed are
Dupont Cromax(excellent durability good coverage)
Matrix ( really nice pearls and effect colours and awesome clear coat)
PPG (not the cheep shop line brand that they make)
Sherwin Williams (if you have to not my favourite)
I painted my 1981 LC in The matrix base coat clear coat.
Cheers
Rob

Interesting... the Elise looks awful in white, unlike the LC LOL! I had a new Elise when the S2 135 came out in 01, it was as unreliable as they say, and would have been my most unreliable car, after a brand new mercedes, until I bought a recent VW Gti, sigh, luckily now gone. The gearbox on the Elise broke in the first week, and that was just the start of its issues... anyway...

Its bizarre that they couldnt produce a swatch, I find it amazing they didnt have all the tints in a paint shop. wow.

Only thing about Marsbars... there are as many different blacks as there are whites :/

Please dont give up on this Scott, I for one (and there are two other in Aus I know of, who are depending on you mate! :)

Great info Rob... which white did you use?

The paint shop deals with PPG and the reading came out to a Dupont match. The Lotus was dual stage and single was Terex Crane white - the Lotus (Old English White) sounds sexier bit more work. Thx Rob for your insight. I used Cromax on my last bike (KR yellow) - very satisfied.

I had a Triumph Spitfire (MK3 1969) in Old English white, looked amazing and that colour would work but perhaps a bit creamy.

I used to go to University in a green Spitfire - fun car but got no respect fm other drivers. I was advised there are 3 types of Old English white (more choices) to deal with. Reminds me of the Ford Diamond White dilemma.

I tried the Sherwin Williams white and it matched perfectly a NOS part . It's the same white used on the RZ500.

Hi JonW
It was a ford color that we now use on some of the helicopters at work so i will look tomorrow and get back to you. Also if you want some bling added to it, the matrix pearl before the clear coat looks really good. This is the formula for the ford platinum pearl white.
