Clean white colour

#1 Post by LC Cnd » Thu Mar 16, 2017 10:26 pm

Want to repaint an Elsie 1981 tank for Spring. Colorite skips paints from 1970-1984 on their website unfortunately. Does anyone have the paint code to create clear white? Thx in advance.

Ive seen lots of people mention car colours, eg Ford Glacier White, but those differ from country to country and year by year it seems. Id love a proper defined LC white that is an exact match to the bikes we had when new, but I dont know what that is... maybe Xavier can help?

Yeah well, looked at Xavier's site (excellent one by the way) and it mentions it a 'colour 36' (clean white) which means zip to the paint specialist I go to. I suspect he'll his face will screw up just like when I showed up with the KR colour code. Oh, correction on that point; it was the drab olive green paint I spec'd - not the KR yellow. That said, Xavier may have more info I'm not privy to perhaps - don't know. Sure would like to have the girl original '81 colour correct if possible. It a popular colour for sure.

yes no one Ive ever known could mix paint by Yams codes, I just wondered if Xavier was collating the colour info from the worldwide forums so he could provide a definitive perhaps?

Just match an original panel by paint chips or spectrograph as you said. It will yield the best results.
Then post your match for us :smt003

While doing research for the KR yellow n' drab olive green, I discovered that motorcycle companies coveted the formulas to create their colour/decal schemes - appearently Kawi colours are the most difficult to match. I would have thought with this form, existing for over a decade, someone would have a member that cracked/shared the code by now. Seen alot of pic's of nice white '81 Elsies on this site and know the generosity our membership - hence, that's why I put up the codes colours discovered. Hoping for qui pro quo and not re-invent the wheel (paint). There is a spray bomb in Britian - course the postage will be more than the paint. They do have a disclaimer regarding their paint however. https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q= ... -P7Xu9tT5A" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Cheers in advance if shared. Now it's time to weld the holes and puddy in those dents now that the weather has warmed.

The problem with scanning and matching even nos panels is that the paint has often changed colour on them. I had my XT500 paint matched from the brand new rear mudguard, but they never gave me the colour mix even when i asked. hmm...

I'm hopefully colour matching from the underside of the tank.

So, here's the data:

Color Rite (WW)
Primary Color: Clean White 036 = Color Rite 5528 ($200 a qt now that I can plug in the code).

RS paints
code1732 36/w available from 01707273219

PPG
WHITE :4576 (Subaru colour, huh)

SHERWIN WILLIAMS (?)
White #58085

MATRIX
WHITE : 4471

Then there is Ford Diamond White (FDW) colour match. Problem here is here is over 30 matches. Decided on the 1981 colour which has interestingly has 2 codes: B0(zero) or BO(oh). There is also a 2012 FDW code 0691. There are your choices. The PPG is $60 a qt plus reducer and etching primer (spray bomb) cause I went right down to the tank metal to weld those pesky pin holes. Suspect that Color Rite is the best quality - don't know. Be doing a low pressure test on the tank following the tank liner (POR15) or line it at the local rad shop before I paint.

And its Canadian like Australian (lol). If your a do it yourselfer, watch your atmospheric humidity before you start painting. Decals are the easy part (Cnd):

Is this a metallic color like the RZ white/red? Matching metallics tends to be even more difficult.

That above data, is that matched from the scan of the bottom of your tank?

Just curious on source. Thanks!

The FDW is the colour I heard had varied over the years. youd think Ford would have kept it the same like everyone else does, but no...

Really great work!

Yes, I did scan the bottom of my tank. Doing three readings is the proper procedure, for the spectrograph used, at the body shop I visited. The challange was the hand held scanner could not get a proper reading on the inside tank bottom due to the scanner's size and the flatest areas where not flat enough to obtain a reading. The next best area was outside on the bottom of the tank opposite the petcock just before it curves up. I did get a Dupont match also assuming that the paint on the tank is original cause I'm not the original owner to verify that. I suspect Evan you perhaps went through the same proceedure, on that white Elsie, you were selling last Summer. If painted, curious about your results. I did collate data, from other forms, that included XT500's & DT125's, that used Clean White cira 1981. I did this because this form caters to members beyond North America - thought those who enjoy Clean White there would like to know what paint options were available. The only members I suspect I may have missed are Down Under and South East Asia - apologies bout that.

Went thought swatches today and didn't care for the PPG - just wee bit on the bright side compared to the tank. There were no samples of the Ford Diamond White available - the 2012 book was on loan. The Dupont 809233 (birch white) appears to be the closest. Interestingly its also a Harley-Davison match. Definitively done.
