TZR250 fairings on RZ fitment question

#1 Post by Mr.Cool » Fri Mar 31, 2017 1:47 am

Does anyone here know which TZR fairing would be a better fit on the RZ? My guess is the 3MA should have a wider lower fairing to support the inline twin vs the 3XV that was the V-twin. But the 3XV would have had an under body pipe from the front cylinder so is it deeper to give way or is there the same under body clearance? (thinking that might be the case because banana swing arm)

So is it better to go 3MA or 3XV?

I cannot see any way the 3ma will fit. I also highly doubt the 3XV would either. With the V setup istead of the inline twin the 3XV should require even less clearance. With the alum spar vs. the full perimeter the RZ is much wider at the bottom of the bike. You would be better off trying to replicate the Brazil bike and use FZR600 bits. Someone else asked this same question a few months back. Thought is was you as well? TZR bits are harder to find than RZ in N. America at least...

Nope, wasn't me. Maybe I'll go with airtech's YZR conversion kit, since it has a very similar look and is actually made for the RZ350.

Ya man, that is the better bet if you ask me. I have a TZR and I don't see any way the bottom would clear the RZ frame and potentially not even the motor. I * believe* the fairing would also not be tall enough given the TZR is basically a 2/3 RZ sizewise.

It would be interesting to see someone go the FZR600 way as apparently this is what came on the front of the Brazilian RZ.

If you have any questions about the YZR kit feel free to shoot me a PM. I have gone through the process and there are a few do's and don'ts/suggestions I would have. If you go this route, don't expect factory fitment as the airtech is race glass and it fits as such (ie. panels do not line up perfectly/straight cut lines). I did quite a bit of mods to fit and for panel fitment.

I have an FZ600 upper fairing, birdcage and lights. I trial fitted it and the upper would be easy. I don't have the sides or lower fairing, but they are clearly different than the Brazil bikes. The upper is close but I think they narrowed it a bit for that application. The RZ sides ('85) do not mate up perfectly with the FZ600 upper, the bottom edge is about 2" longer on the FZ. You could trim it to fit but I think it would all look better with longer side panels.

The Brazil bikes apparently (according to people here) had the FZR600 bodywork on them. The entire front fairing is different than stock RZ, the upper and the sides based on the updated appearance of the vents.

I would be interested in trying but would need to find another RZ first...

The AirTECH fairing bolts right on the early YPVS bikes, '83-'85. No problems. The F2 is another story, as Evan says. I've just returned from a 5 day stay with AirTECH to fit the YZR350 replikit to the F2. It will soon be available. The fairing is unchanged, but the mounting hardware is different. It bolted right up to my 100% stock F2. The seat has also been altered to fit the F2. The new modified YZR350 kit will soon be available for the F2, 1986-1990 in Canada.
Any questions about the F2 kit can be directed to Walt or Kent at AirTECH or me at Grumpy Lui Racing.

Sounds like Rory has sorted things out to make the F2 fit. If only I had waited a couple years! As I think everyone can see Rory is making a serious effort here to make this all work and provide some solid customer service. He is also a big buyer of the updated bits so he should have a good first person perspective. What is the Cdn pricing on the F2 kit these days Rory?

It's currently in the $1200 CAD range. It's all made to order, so the price is dependent on the exchange rate and shipping. Lead time is currently 3 weeks plus shipping.

I'm doing my RZV500 with a 1992 FZR600 front body work. The only thing I did was get the smaller RZV500 decal to incorporated into the existing side panels
