derusting tank

#1 Post by rdrob » Sun Dec 10, 2017 1:48 am

Hi thought I'd share these pictures I tried a new product called metal rescue I'm sure some have seen or used it
but for anyone that has not it's a great product best of all I like how it does not flash rust afterwards.

This tank is for a friends track bike as well I'm doing a tank for myself. It has sat for 4 years and was so badly rusted
and got a great result after 26 hours sitting placed in the sun to get the tank nice and warm to.

Now to flip over and do the top next weekend as if you leave it too long they say the steel can go black!

You can go further in derusting with Evaporust , from experience ER is a better economical solution and will get the metal shiny . Metal Rescue solution get rapidly exhausted and leave dark spots .

If the rust is not bad, you can do the charged galvanized pipe dunk. The pipe trades the galvanization for the rust.

My problem was that metal rescue seemed to give up pretty quickly as it had eaten its fill even though there was still more rust. What irked me was that my tank started off no where near as bad as what youve shown Rob so metal rescue just stopped and that was that. Considering it cost $60+ for 4L I gave up and filled my tank with 20L of white vinegar from the supermarket, at $1.20/2L the total coat was just over $20 for that and while it worked a little slower it worked very well indeed. Ive used vinegar on all sorts now, all my recent plating has been pre derusted with it etc.

I do use the metal rescue sister product called Dry Coat, thats perfect for keeping rust at bay after vinegar etc - I dunk parts in it, if you spray you waste most of the product.

If you are going to use vinegar use pickling/cleaning vinegar.
same price, twice as strong, usually 10% acetic acid.

I usually use full strength muriatic acid, cheap at pool supply stores. BE VERY CAREFUL. STRONG STUFF!
You are trying to "pickle" the metal, any acid will work.

Hey Jon, have you got a fodder store local? Might be cheaper.

I think they use vinegar on or in horses.

Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid, it eats steel 6 times faster than it eats rust

If you want to use muriatic or hydrochloric buy it as an inhibited acid, it will then only attack the rust and not the base metal, in this case steel

If you use un-inhibited hydrochloric you may as well fill your tank with sea water it will be a bugger to get the chloride out and your tank will keep on rusting

Thanks for this. I have since switched between the 2 products since I did not like the dark spots...

There sure are a few ways to derust from all the feedback. Did the tank on my z1 the other filled it up to the brim held tight came out the
next morning and now have a pin hole leak seems as rust was filling the hole lol.

That is normal. Your options are to cut out all the bad metal and weld in new or coat the tank.

Weld up the pinhole and put in a liner.
