Stainless steel allen screws.

How did you put a point on the end of it?

I've done no modification to it, just the proper lenght and added the gasket. It was just a regular philip screw when I disassembled it, no taper. I will look on the second one tomorrow to see if the screw is a special one.

For clutch friction plates and springs. What should I buy? I bough a Chariot performance clutch basket and a new Yamaha clutch boss.

RutZy, you said FZR1000, that seems interesting, I've also heard FZR600, any year would fit? What about the springs?

Looking for advices, thanks!

I haven't looked lately but my memory of a mikuni drain screw agrees with Googles, https://www.google.ca/#q=mikuni+drain+screw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The FZR1000 friction plates may be the same PN as the 600. (search on here, I've posted it before) The 1000 uses the same steels as the 350, just more of them, the the friction plates work with the RZ if you leave out the damper rings, and you get about 20% more contact area. I bought some heavier springs, Barnett IIRC, but you can use TZ250 or many others, it's just a spring. The heavier ones are usually a bit longer too, I used 3 of those alternated with 3 stock ones. The clutch pull is decent even with shorty levers and I have over 25000km on it with no problems at all. Even the stock springs would be fine with the wider plates if they were all new, I think all 6 springs being heavy duty would be an arm killer.

Thanks, from http://www.yamahapart.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, the FZ600 and FZR1000 uses the 4H7-16321-02-00. The FZR1000 also use one friction plate 3GM-16321-00-00, I guess its a different thickness, but all other plates are like the FZ600. So 4H7-16321-02-00 is the P/N I need.

The powder coated rear shock tensioner (installing the part despite not requiring it as a legacy part).

The powder coated seat locking units.

For the clutch, I have ordered 8 FZR1000 fiber plate 4H7-16321-02-00 plus 1 RZ350 steel plate (already have 6). That should all fit in the Chariot Performance clutch I have on order.

Did the clutch upgrade with the basket kit from Chariot Performance

1. Center punch - drilled a lexan piece to rivet head diameter and used a center punch of same diameter to make sure I was in the center.

Image

2. Drilled with 1/8 in. and increased drill bit diameter until the rivet head felt weakened.

Image

3. Removed rivet heads and then pressed out the rivets and removed the back plate.

Image

4. Cleaned the driven gear.

Image

5. Taken the OEM paper gasket/slider (found in between the basket and driven gear) and drawn the new basket design.

Image

6. Cut the paper gasket/slider with a small blade.

Image

7. Installed the paper gasket/slider and verified fitment.

Image

8. Placed the o-ring cushion over the basket.

Image

9. Placed the driven gear over the basket and moved up the o-ring cushion in the recess.

Image

10. Installed the 8 provided cushions and the 4 OEM smaller cushions.

Image

11. Placed the rear plate and put high strength permatex/loctite on the provided 4 screws.

Image

12. Torqued all bolts to 5 Nm, then 10 Nm, 15 Nm and finally 20 Nm.

Image

13. Upgrade completed !!

After some failures (powder coating, stripping, bead blasting X 3), and refining my techniques, I am finally satisfied with the engine head, not perfect but very good from a small distance. Will lay out my successful process later today.

Lovely pics of the clutch basket work, and a great tutorial there. very cool.

Loving the coated head, did you use red powder in the YPVS? I was tempted to try that by just pouring it in the engraving and doing one side at a time, but wondered if the 2nd go would have the first lot running out due to being inverted.

I did use the same red powder as I used on the frame. I tried rattle can for the red but I was not getting the proper color. I also tried pouring red powder, one side at a time but I didn't like the result. So, for the red and black, I used the powder coating gun. I'll explain how below, with pictures.

So, I never seen that on any other RZ before but I wanted the YPVS to stand out on the engine. Here's how I've done it.

1. Tape both side of the head and carefully cut each letters (I used transparent silicone tape to facilitate cutting).

Image

2. Using permatex bronze (very high temp) fill all letters on both sides.

Image

3. Scrape the excess right away (keep your tape larger than seen on this picture, see the picture 2 above for a good example)

Image

4. Remove the masking tape and let dry at ambiant temperature for 6 hours

Image

5. Carefully remove the letters (now feels like soft rubber) and cook them at 375F for an hour. Don't cook them on the head because they will stick hard, ruining the job. Also keep track from which side they were casted.

Image

5. Mask the body of the head and power coat each side in red. Prior to my final attempt, I had done just the letters in red but I ended up with unpainted gap between the black and red at some places and had to redo the job.

Image

6. Use a sand block to sand both side in order to prepare for the black coat but leave enough red around the letter to ensure no unpainted gaps remain.

Image

7. Mask the head as appropriate and cover the YPVS using the casted letters (in permatex).

Image

8. Powder coat the black layer, place in oven. Then as soon as the powder has flowed on the head, open the oven and remove the permatex letters using a sharp object and your fingers (if you don't remove them when at that point they can slowly fall from their place causing a bad paint job) and then continue cooking the paint for the appropriate time. Tadam!
