Re: Rory's US Air-Tech YZR fairing on Canadian FI Build Thre
I had one of the YZR350 tails on mine for years, one of the guys on the 500 board bought the kit and didn't use the tail so I got a good deal, but glass only, no seat pan or anything. I made my own mounts, support for the seat area and seat pad and it came out pretty good. I didn't have any issues with it, and wouldn't have wanted it any heavier, it would just be dead weight. It's bodywork, not a boat hull. The seat pan I made supported it well enough that the glass wasn't carrying my weight in a flexing mode, it was just sandwiched between the seat pad and frame. I went back to stock for comfort, and I also got to thinking it made the back of the bike look heavy without the rest of the fairing kit to balance it out.
My opinions are based on 'form follows function', if it works well and mechanical preparation are good then I'm happy. While I certainly appreciate the extreme effort and commitment it takes to make a bike show quality that's not what I'm in it for, I want to ride it. If my bike looks anywhere near as good as a show bike from 20 feet away it's good enough for me. I think Rory has similar expectations, so if you are the type to spend a grand on a paint job this might not be for you.

Amen Brutha..That pretty much sums up the issue.
And at $1000 to paint a RZ is 1980s prices, for a $1000 it's a el cheapo shop or doing it yourself, the paint alone will cost you, $425.00.
I got 1/2 dozen estimates last year for a 100% stock repaint, all of them exceeded $2000.00.

Totally agreed! Race glass, not meant for anything other then rattle can paint jod. Unless you can handle the demise of your hard earned cash. Not to say that it can't look good. Just don't be surprised when fibreglass does it's thing, stress cracks.
My OW69 inspired paint is almost good from far, but far from good. I'm still working on it.
Dyno for the bike on Thursday night. Last year with the stock set up the bike ran 42 bhp at the rear wheel. This year the same engine has Toomey's and K&Ns.

I got 15 bhp by making that one switch of intakes and exhausts. Same setup.

Please report your results, curious as to what the pipe/intake mod delivers on a 32 year old Canada spec engine, I know the U.S. bike always increase by 11-15 h.p..makes for a really fun bike ride and still completely streetable.hondaror wrote: Dyno for the bike on Thursday night. Ok, here they are.
Last year: mains 160, power jets 60 Right, 65 left and needle on 2nd clip from top. Altitude 3700 feet. Air screws: 2 1/4. 31k barrels and head, F2 pipes, stock air box with snorkel removed. Rear wheel hp, 42.
This year, same engine. Changes, Toomey pipes, real K&N pods. (Do not use knock offs, they don't work).
Results: mains 260, pjs same as above, clip 5th or bottom, air screws 1 1/2 turns out, rear wheel hp, 56.
The bike is a rocket ship now. I ran out of gas on the way home and burbled there, as the Pingel petcock sucks for reserve setting.

Lol...are you a Toomey believer now...lol .hondaror wrote:Ok, here they are.

Pretty much the best all around pipe design ever built for a mass produced pipe and combined w better airflow, you see the results.
The thing I enjoy about Toomeys is their great power delivery...everywhere, they rip down low & scream at redline. And the obvious distinctive Toomey sound!
What are your thoughts/impressions about this?
F1 pipes are decent performers too, so to bump 56 h.p. from a pipe change and free breathing filters...on stock motor & carbs, is quite nice. Awesome actually!! when you consider the fact that it's again a 30+ year old stock motor w only 347cc.
Rewarding in the sense that you know that with some more work that you are easily capable of delivering h.p. in the 60 +h.p range, while still having a reliable motor. And combined with a RZs fairly low weight and great handling...It's all smiles buddy????
I'm assuming you have original Toomeys, or do you have the new designs?
I might go back to the new Toomeys..I like the fact that they now deliver more midrange and the billet O ringed manifolds are the bomb!
Also.... Can you weight one,or the set?
They were as always so dammned light for..durable mild steel production pipe

I'm not sure what generation they are, but they are pretty heavy. Reinforced along the front seem. I was never not a believer. I was waiting patiently to get the pods on. Still fiddling with the tune. I backed the air screws out to 2 1/4 turns and will go to 2 1/2 in the morning. I have 2 other sets of hand made pipes that are much lighter. Will weigh them at season end.

I'm not sure if I'd call the exactly "heavy" , but it's "realtive" to comparison. ?. Especially when compared to some of the thin steel sectioned designs out there.hondaror wrote:I'm not sure what generation they are, but they are pretty heavy. Toomeys weigh in @ a documented 11.5 lbs for the set, not too shabby taking into account that...
Stock US pipes w catalysts are approx 32 lbs
Canadian stock pipes are 21 lbs.
Lomas weigh in at a documented approx weight of 6.5 lbs then w silencers 9.5 lbs.. total, so I'm assuming your hand built pipes are close.
The Toomeys I'd still prefer to consider them rather light, considering their sturdy durable construction.Like Spec 2s , Toomeys survive crashes well...lol I know my sectioned pipes would never survive...lol
Toomey has 1.0-3.0 designs
1st Gen are fairly traditional like most others, except for their distinctive silencers .
3.0 (current) has upward curved stingers, carbon silencers, O-ringed billet spigots and a slight redesign for better mid range power.

Today I backed the air screws out to 3 turns. It's better off the line now. Powers up really well.

Today I put in about 3 1/2 hours saddle time. Had a blast. Traded bikes with an RC51 owner for my first taste of that legendary thumper. What a torque monster.
Sunday evening joined Peter and Kelly for a ride and socializing.
Today, met up with Todd, who bought Sharath's KR RZ. He was on his RC51, and we traded bikes for a brief blast. Fun!

What was Todd's take on your bike vs. Sharath's?

RC51, there's a bike on my wish list. How'd you like riding it? (i.e. would you buy one?)

I never understood the appeal of a big V-twin until I rode a friend's TL1000 up to Whistler. Now my other street bike is an '08 Aprilia RSV...

He said mine hits really hard. We were doing 200kmh on a nice stretch of fresh pavement. I was following him on his RC, and he on my gage less bike. Lol.evan_calgary wrote:What was Todd's take on your bike vs. Sharath's?
