My next task with plating was to track down someone who does green passivation... If only that was simple as saying those words, it’s not. I would think that most of the restorers downunder who read this will be nodding sagely now and thinking, like I was, that I am perhaps the only person on the RD/RZ forums to have located the one place that does it... but once I got there I found that it was obviously being kept a secret by the rest of the restoration community as there were boxes and boxes of bike bits there, dropped off and sent in from all over Aus, and plenty of them were Yamaha parts that I recognised, so thanks guys who kept quiet about this... Not!

Image

(Obviously again there are parts in the pics that belong to other of my projects :smt001 )

The newly plated parts got me excited to get on and the LC engine is now mostly built. I will say that it wasn’t without its challenges though. Im must be getting old as I really thought that over the years I’d been through these parts with my usual fine toothed comb, and in some ways I had, but others, well, not so much. I had ordered up a bunch of new stuff for it (uprated gearbox and OEM crank bearings, seals, clutch pusher, shift shaft, lock tabs, missing bolts etc) but when I got started I realised that Id either forgotten about or missed a bunch of the critial parts that were not in the box or just plain old and broken - I was back to struggling with the DPOs crap! E.g. he had managed to lose one of the screws that hold in the rev counter gears in place and round off the clutch lock plate screws totally, ok, yeah they all do that... But I didn’t have any replacements handy. What’s worse was that he’d not only lost the clutch ball bearing (easily sourced from my local bearing factor, its a simple 5/16 ball, but I had to go out and play in the traffic to get it), but had broken one of the bolt towers off the clutch drum boss. Then to top it off, when opening up the clutch plates, which looked like an ok set last time I sighted them, the steels were all rusted which meant the frictions were contaminated as well, the lot went in the bin. I really thought I had sourced a brand new clutch kit, but obviously not, so to keep going I fitted a good set of used parts and ordered some new bits. I needed to keep going in case anything else was missing...

I next struggled to find inlet rubbers that werent cracked and in the end found the best of the ones I’d already thrown in the bin and fitted them as wanted to run a quick pressure test to establish that the crank case halves were sealed, the crank seals were doing their job and that cylinders were bedded in ok. It passed no problem other than the usual leaks round where the kit fitted, Im fated to have issues with this I think.

Image

While I await the inlet and clutch parts I fitted new bearings and seals to the refurbished OEM crank case cover, added the water pump and one of Arrows stunning 350 oil pumps and fitted the new green JIS case screws to make sure I had them all and also stop any dust getting in the right side of the motor.

Image

And yes I did bright zinc the waterpump cover and it should be yellow, but its better than the rusty originals I had lol. The WP screws should be shiny and not green too... I know... I just greened all my JIS screws so was stuck with green, not often you get to moan youve too many green parts! LOL

Next up I need to thread on a good stator grommet and fit the stator/flywheel and check the timing and fit the engine to the frame, I can fit the inlets and the clutch later of course, but at least Ive proved the engine is pressure tight already, a nice milestone.

Thanks Rob, yeah, no one likes to share that info it seems... I have and will tho. :)

I should also say this bike has now got a thermostat fitted. Im running the Yamaha Snowmobile unit in a light groove that was cut in the thermo housing when I was at LB's late last year... how time flies!

So what level of madness is there when you find green passivate is available locally?

Well... Let me just put this pic up and see what it does for you? If you swoon, youre as mad as me... if you don’t then you probably should be looking at other threads, this one is not for you!

Image

Yes that was originally a rusty oil pipe protector spring, now its lovely again...!

Next up... obviously I had a problem... No not being mad, tho that helps, but an actual ‘issue’ with the brand new OEM seat latch (part of the matched set with the ignition and fuel cap). This comes with a modern black lever... which should be green. Many of the modern finishes on brand new OEM green parts are black now. So, naturally this was swapped over to a recently ‘greend’ one... Yes after I did it I laughed to myself inwardly at the madness of this stuff, the fact that is was a brand new OEM unit and I just opened and replaced part of it, yet no one looking at the bike would ever know...

Image

Im sure you could guess by now, but the latch for other side in the pic is a fully restored unit; powdercoated body with all the internals and rear plate bright zinc'd, new screws and the lever is another re-green'd part.

So... You have been warned... Don’t become like me LOL!

Jon, I think you should vacation in Calgary next winter, our summer, and plan to stay about 3 months so we can restore one of my bikes together. Good idea, huh?!

I don't expect you to go all out with the resto, just throw one together in 3 months kind of fun.

Nice job Jon. Pay attention to the cast floor on the right side case water pipe, I just finished an lc 250 engine to add to my lc collection. Yamaha have a casting join point line on the horizontal plane that is worth a round off with some emery.

Thanks mate, do you mean inside the case itself, ie where the water pump pushes the water into the pipe? If so even the new banshee covers come with that part poorly opened up. I now as a matter of course open them up fully as its a huge restriction to water flow.
