A while back a forumer read through this thread and took pity on my horn brackets and sold me his 3 spare ones which was kind of him. I finally got the decals so I paint stripped, blasted and powdered these:

Not much in the way of actual progress but I did buy one of these (here it is test fitted to my 421 to check it)

Very nice, is that a Norbo supplied fuel tank?
What would you rate it out of 10?
Any issues or views about it?

The tanks that Norbo sells are also available from other sources too and I actually bought it from Yambits for two reasons: 1, they offer VAT free pricing which saves a bunch of money (20%) and 2, they offer a worldwide postal service for these using Fed EX which while not cheap means youre paying much the same as the Brits buying one at full VAT price and having it sent within the UK.

I'd rate it very good, I would think close on 10/10 really. Its very crisp and follows the lines of the originals in every way. Ive not put a cap or petcock in it yet, but reckon it will be fine. There are a few small parts where some high build primer will be needed, especially under the rounded front parts but other than that its nice and flat, has oil inside too to protect the inside. Quite a few of the UK chaps are using these on restorations and are very happy with them and when I look at my other tanks I reckon the less well defined edging is a factor of Yams less good dies and also filler over the surface over the years. Of course the crisp lines will be a bit less well defined on these when they're painted too as right now its in a thin white primer.

These are quite different to the Indian tanks that dont fit the bikes at all and also are badly shaped. Those were done by hand I think. These are stamped out and it shows, the sides are equal and the shape is correct etc.

well the 421 is stripped and the frame is laid bare... reversed the Triumph side stand mods and whipped out the steering bearings it would be ready to build but Im concerned about the alignments as I never got the chain alignment i wanted on the 421. Im investigating that before I build this frame up of course.

In the meantime I fitted the OEM indicator lenses I bought and this will make you wince... plan was to fit OEM orange ind covers to my aftermarket LC inds, they are US$3each so bargain to look more OEM as OEM bodies are NLA now. These lenses are tight to clip on, they have to not bounce off when riding an LC of course... One was being a total ba*tard to get one, nothing would made it go 'clip'... it was like it was a bit big. Anyway it finally with lots and lots of squeezing loudly went 'POP!' into place... and i went 'OOOOUCH!'... it had grabbed a bit of thumb skin when it went in and ripped a 5x8mm pretty thick piece of skin off which was now sticking out of the join between the indicator body and orange cover. Of course there blood everywhere instantly as nothing to hold it in. Blood, sweat and tears... and a bit of skin in my builds it seems. sigh.

:smt023 :smt022 :smt044 Sounds painful Jon. You going to take the cover off to retrieve the bit of you or leave it there?

Well there ya go, learn something new everyday, I dont remember these in any of the pipes I pulled off back in the day, but its been a while and no one ran standard pipes for long, and of course aftermarket wont have anything like a restriction in it. To be honest, I've never had a problem getting the gaskets in as they locate in the cylinder and the pipe centers itself on the spigot and the flange bolts, anyway I asked about these in my F1 thread half way down this page: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4650&start=705#p140234 and since no one answered at all so I whipped them out, easily done.. and they can go back in if i wanted but theyre gone now and ive a minimally less restrictive exhaust so it works for me :smt023

Just noticed this bit Jon

I have them in the 350 F1 i'm doing up, they were rusty as an old nail so I've pulled them out, I doubt they will go back in as they are real soft and bent now
