Picking Up My 1984 RZ-350 Project Bike This Weekend

#1 Post by b-bike393 » Mon Aug 10, 2015 12:56 am

Been trying to finalize the transfer for several months. But this weekend we’re sealing the deal.
It’s a Canadian red - white that I want to convert to yellow - black version.
Don’t want to rush the build, just want to do it right. The plan right now is to bring it back “mostly stock” with just a few upgrades.

I will be seeking all the advise I can get from the wealth of knowledge that resides here.

Pictures to follow. Can’t hardly wait... :smt026

DISCLAIMER... It’s a 1983

Oh well, no worries.

O.K. boys and girls, here it is. All (most, some bolts & nuts are missing) the bits and pieces are now home.
If I’m going to do this project I plan on doing it right. That means I’ll be taking my time.
But when it’s done... WOOO HOOO!

Let the fun begin. :smt026 :smt041 :smt023 :smt045

The previous owner tore it down with the intentions of doing a total rebuild.
So, the addition of primer on a few areas was done by him (I’m thinking) as a preemptive strike against rust.

There are a number of areas that a bit of rust is showing thru. My plan is to strip the frame and paint it black.

Nothing gets by all you RZ Experts. Yes, according to the guy I got the bike from, the swing arm is from a much newer model.

Here’s a question:
What manual should I look for as a great source of information.
As I looked at the wiring harness and much of the other parts, my concern is, I want to make sure I’m not missing something important.

Get a Haynes, else an original Yam 31k manual, I reckon most of what you have there is early RZ, ie USA 83-85, ROW 84-84. But engine code, wiring code, stator type etc etc will give more info.

I would stay with the 83 canadian colors , they are awesome and your bike would be even rarer than a yellow KR in US .

Nice score b-bike. Indeed the 83 is quite rare in the US. You may never see another one (unless you come to California :smt002 ).

Consider sticking with that paint scheme.

One thing I dislike about this model is the painted red swingarm. If you are going to use stock RZ suspension parts for your build, I suggest the silver finish (which you already have) on the swingarm. Oh, I see you said you are going to paint the frame black so you would not finish the swingarm in red :smt009 .

Have fun with your build.

Shameless plug of another US 83 bike :smt042
