Another LC rebuild.

Re: Another LC rebuild.
Lol sorry i got called away before i could finish it.....last night shift......
Narr i chickened out,im going to keep drilling & try to retap it. Yes John & Jon the impact driver screwed the head right off so really no chance of the easy break getting it out, hence the bit by bit lol. Oh & i used the left hand fluted drills too, they didnt move it either.

Damn, the left hand drills are always my go to... but ive found tif they fail its prob no good doing anything else and your drill/retap plan is the best one :/

Re: Another LC rebuild.
I had similar situation stripping my TZR motor. Tried the easy-out method with no luck. Then used a pneumatic drill and new bits and had the problem solved quickly. Cleaned up the threads with a tap and back to perfect.
Pneumatic drill and fresh bits are the key to success.

Shock to the threads, forces them to let go. With an air chisel/punch. Often works for me.

Re: Another LC rebuild.
I don't even touch those damn phillips/JIS screws anymore without smacking them with the one of those slide hammer mounted bits. They come out 96% of the time using that tool and typically with minimal mangling to the heads. Using just a bit or an impact drill them get stripped quite often.
Re: Another LC rebuild.
the JIS screws come out ok with my impact driver, but i think impact drivers must be JIS as the cam out design of philips would be useless with an impact. I do keep meaning to buy a JIS screwdriver, but never get round to it, as like most of us we are now used to our own ways n means of shifting these without the correct tools. :)

Re: Another LC rebuild.
Speed, precision, light weight, etc. With an electric drill the speed is just too slow to be of any real use. Not to mention the weight and bulk. It's difficult to be precise. A pneumatic drill is small and light and turns very fast. Try drilling though a piece of metal with an electric drill and then a pneumatic drill and you'll soon see the advantage.two-stroke-brit wrote:whats the advantage of an air drill ??

Re: Another LC rebuild.
Always surprises me how many guys I see using cordless drills working on machinery when there are air lines nearby. Add in the benefits of a keyed chuck, and a good set of left hand drill bits will often bring out the offending bolt before you finish drilling.silverstrom wrote: Speed, precision, light weight, etc. With an electric drill the speed is just too slow to be of any real use. Re: Another LC rebuild.
Stupid fitter i am then lol, went for the mill instead of the air drill lol....
I have a story to explain why, this is before i had the mill & lathe. A friend here who is known for building exceptional harleys etc. Well i had a set of cases that had a broken stud,a barrel stud. I took it to him hoping he could drill it out for me on his mill, well i got side tracked in his workshop & was being shown other bikes n projects in another part of his shed while matey was working on my cases. Thinking he'll take awhile to mount case on mill etc....
5 min later he walks out n goes "well a helicoil should fix it now"........he had taken to it with an electric drill,he had drilled off the stud & gone into the aly case.....i now have to end mill this hole out & have it tig welded up,redrill n tap it.
Leason learned.....never let harley mechanics work on jap bikes lol.
Edit; forgot to mention why i didnt use air drill cause i really thought the left hand drills would do the job but my old air drill doesnt have reverse lol.

Re: Another LC rebuild.
Wow....I move so fast on these builds.....
Anyway,an update lol & a change in direction.
Blank canvas.....
Which will get the RGV wheels forks & maybe the swinger.Trying to get a JMC swinger from UK,we will see. Trial fit everything then strip, paint etc etc etc......
The motor thats in the N1 now will then go into this LC.That will happen when I finish the original N1 motor, which should be soon.....as soon as a big fkn box from Cal. turns up that is.....
