I know that these mounts are for the front brake lines.
However, I have yet been able to find the "EXACT" location of where these are mounted securely to the bike.
I've seen several pictures of RZ's and these parts are located by the fender - fork area. But when I look at this area I can't seem to find the area where these would fit.
Or, am I missing an additional bracket for these mounts?
Is the fact that I'm using the R-1 front calipers instead of the original RZ calipers have anything to do with my inability to locate the mounting location?

Little help....

Spent time fixing the road rash on the right expansion chamber.
Followed the original weld lines on the pipe to help camouflage the repair.
Where the repair welds didn't follow those lines, I feathered those smooth.
For some dumb reason I didn't take pictures of the final results before hanging the freshly repainted pipe back on the bike.
Suffice to say, that when the Yamaha Dealership seen the bike, they couldn't see where the pipe was repaired.

The old rash.

Image

Before I cut the old metal away I drilled each corner to keep the post weld procedure heat and vibration stress to a minimum.

Image

First bit of formed sheet metal.
I used slightly thicker metal so when I welded it onto the pipe I spent more residence time on the PRIME metal rather than the PARENT metal.

Image

Doing this in two sections made the repair much easier.
Rear section being removed.

Image

Again, I drilled all corners to remove stress.

Image

Formed the rear section.

Really... All it takes is time.

Time to think about how best to do it.
Time to re-think everything.
Time to draw out the pattern on the pipe.
Time to cut out the pattern on craft paper.
Time to lay the craft paper on the pipe to check for proper coverage.
Time to lay out and cut out your pattern on the PRIME metal
Time to form, reform, reform and reform the PRIME metal so it lays perfectly over the damaged area.
Time it takes using a scribe to outline on your pipe where the new PRIME metal piece is going.
Time it takes to drill the holes at each corner. (do not drill outside the scribe lines. I did on one hole and had to carefully weld that area due to not having metal there)
Time to shape, trim, reshape, trim again the PRIME metal so it fits perfectly into the cut-out.
Time to set up the welder so you don't melt through the PARENT or PRIME metal.
Time to clean the oil residue away from inside the pipe around the whole area you intend to weld to keep oil from contaminating the weld.
Time to tac weld the PRIME metal into place so it best fits the circumference of the pipe.
Time to stitch weld (1/2 inch weld, stop. move far away from that weld and run another 1/2 inch weld, stop) the entire circumference of the PRIME metal into place.
All that time spent is so you don't warp the PARENT metal of the pipe.
Time using a 180 grit sanding disk on the pneumatic angle grinder to feather out the weld without going too deep into the PRIME or PARENT metal.
Time using a buffing pad on the pneumatic angle grinder to completely blend in the welded areas.

It's a good thing I had two full days to get this project done.
Worth every second. :smt003

I just talked to the paint shop ( I have free use of his paint booth ) and I'm clear to get this stuff in.
My daughters 1983 BMW R-65 tank as plastics need a bit more work than I'll get everything in the booth and shoot the color.
Getting really excited to finally get my RZ finished!

We've had important family issues keep me away from my RZ project.
This last week I finally finished shooting the paint and clear.
I can't say enough positive things about the graphics that rzsunlimited has available.
Their product is amazing and their customer service is outstanding.
I have a few remaining pieces being delivered and by the end of October this 8 year project will be compete.

The paint was shot in the temporary paint booth in my garage
The front fender doesn't require graphics so it was already done.
Here's what the paint, clear and graphics look like.
