87 350 Project

#1 Post by evan_calgary » Sat Oct 31, 2015 12:51 pm

Picked this thing up some time ago and working on it. ex race bike with a ported motor, micron pipes, daytona brace, goodridge lines with the most firm RZ brakes i've ever felt and some other goodies. I currently have no spark which is a real pain.

Going to run most of the YZR350 bodywork with an unknown tail that came on the bike. I'm going to get custom paint on it so I wanted to take the time to reinforce the bodywork enough that I won't end up with cracks in it quickly. The bodywork is going to need a solid work week to get it close to paint shape.

In the pics you can see I have been using 8-layer unidirectional carbon in the mounting spaces and areas that can help remove some of the vibration. This similar to what is used on supercar frames, overkill but its all I had lying around. Need to figure out fairing front mounts as Rory alerted me to the fact this was meant to mount to a F1 bike. Will have to break out the tig.

This is going to take much of the winter but should be fun. Threw in a 88 gsxr I am upgrading the suspension on to USD 92W specs. Its amazing the GSXR is only 2 years newer than when this RZ was first released. The GSXR is just so much more tech and suerior in most ways. It handles extremely quickly as well.

The seat looks cut out for the F1.

Quick updated picture of bodywork fitted. Had to take quite a bit out of the lower to fit the micron. Yes Rory, like I said it fits the F2.

Good to see Evan. The fairing looks too high and too far forward to me. Are you fitting it with the stock bar location?

Agreed, I think the line of the side panel should run with the frame tube, tho even the OEM did sit quite a way forwards:

The most forward it could be would be about 1/4 of an inch. Trying to think if we accounted for the additional mounting length of the 87 frame versus the 83 mount. The height also was eyeballed off the fairing mounted on the 83 frame then transferred to the 87. I may shorten the mount slightly. I see what you are saying. It also doesn't help the visual when there are no wheels.

Rory, why do you ask about stock handlebars? I have aftermarket clip ons but have heard the positioning is quite aggressive with this fairing. Wouldn't bother me unless you see a problem?

Don't think it's too high but does look too far forward. Fitting front forks and wheel will make it clearer. Nose of fairing should be about on line with front wheel spindle.

I agree that the fairing is too far forward.

The position will be aggressive. Defo hard on the wrists.

It will look great when done!

I will have to take another look at moving it back. I dont't think it is going down at all at this point. That may make it look a bit high I guess but shouldn't mess up the lines I hope? This is a saturday only project for me really. The micron pipes require a lot of cutting to fit with this fairing. I may have to see if I can slip a little tighter under the bike but not confident.

The positioning in your pic is just about right. Look a side profile of most YZR kits fitted, and you will see your fairly equal. Air tech did the best they could fitting this look to a mid size 80s road bike. There are a few things that give this kit visual challenges, The RZ tank is huge and long. Visually the subframe and seat also lay out rather horizontal which doesnt compliment the overall look. Overall for what it is, when painted with good graphics/paint schemes it looks quite good, but many just look rather plain overbearing with a single color. I do agree, these kits require massive work to get sutible for a decent paintjob, Its basiclly race bodywork, without alot of reinforcement and trimming and fastening it will likley crack here & there eventually. Its the way it is we gotta live with it.

Thanks Questo. It doesn't help that there is no motor or suspension on the bike. hole in the front looks extra big. I think I may have welded the mount about 1/4" too far forward maximum by not accounting for the distance of the mounting bracket to the headstock. May move it back but its going to require more cutting of the fairing.

I guess I'm going to feel your pain when I start fitting mine. If the whole thing sat a smidge lower you'd have more room for the pipes. The clip-ons should be roughly mid triple.

Rory, I would recommend running whatever the most upswept pipes you have with this fairing. The more height you can get after the motor the better. That picture was taken after already cutting out a huge amount of the fairing. Your right I may have more room but the standard cutout is deceptively high in the fairing as well.

Well I pulled back the whole fairing this weekend and you guys are right, it looks better. The location it fits as a kit is pretty much where I had it before as all the mounts had to be cut and re-welded. Guage bracket is tacked. I think I cut out about half of the lower to fit around the pipes which I also pulled in closer to the swinger. Lots of work...Rory, if you want any ideas when you get started let me know, learning a lot.
