My new RZ/R5 build

#1 Post by jaminj946 » Fri Oct 06, 2017 12:48 pm

Finished a project I've been working on off and on for a while. RZ350 in a R5 frame with hand shaped aluminum body work, one off swing arm, triple trees, Ducati dry clutch, and 250 lbs wet. Beautiful bike, and very fast. New to posting here so if I'm breaking any rules let me know, but here's an album of it's construction here in my shop. http://s730.photobucket.com/user/jaminj ... how/Yamaha" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Superb.

What part of the world are you from?

Have you built any other customs?

No way is this your first try! :smt003

How'd you decide on an RZ engine?

Yes I am from Des Moines Iowa. I have built many custom bikes over the years, but most have been Harley Davidsons since that's kinda where my business evolved into. I have a shop that specializes in body and paint and metal fab of vintage cars, exotics and motorcycles. It's a small shop with just me and my wife and I have been in business since 1985, having worked for another shop before that since I was 16. I built a lot of custom Harleys and choppers for customers through the late 90s - early 2000's when that was all the rave, and now my bread and butter is paint matching late model Harleys for repairs and matching paint on aftermarket accessories etc. and metal shaping and fabrication. But I have always loved older less mainstream bikes especially 2-strokes. I've restored paint work on several kawi H1s and H2s for a customer in Japan and owned a '70 H1 and a 72 H2. Current bikes are a a couple Harleys, a pair of Honda Dreams, and the Yamaha. My first bike was a Yamaha 100 twin when I was maybe 12 or so and since then have loved and owned several 2-strokes. I always liked RDs ( or R5s) and ran across a RZ at a decent price and picked it up and rode it a couple years before building this current bike which I always thought would be an awesome marriage of water cooled PV'd 2-stroke with the old school and great handling of the RD chassis in a retro TR3 kinda design. I set my goal on 250lbs finished and it ended up at 249 lbs with oil in crankcase when done which I couldn't believe lol. Sadly I'm thinking of putting it on E-bay to help finance an addition we put on our building, but every time I roll it out of storage I smile and think maybe I will wait,.....then I ride it and ......well I still have it ;).
