My Eff-too

#1 Post by JonW » Fri Oct 20, 2017 8:42 pm

*** If anyone is interested in reading about what im doing with this one in a more condensed and rewritten form, Ive hosted the build on my website now:
http://2smoked.com/Yamaha_RZ350_F2_-_35 ... yrbid.html

--

Ok, dont expect this project to happen anytime soon... But last week I was idly chatting to one of my good mates who offered me a share in a deal he was doing, I'd end up with an F2 out of it for sensible money... how could I turn that down? LOL

I dont normally do anything RZ post 1985 and of course sold all the parts for those bikes that I had... hmm... but, I've always wanted an F2, long story which i'll talk about another time, but they are rare in Aus and really a 1 year deal here I think, only in 1986. In 87 (and poss 88) we had F2s with locally fitted round headlight full fairings, horrid, after that in Aus marketplace the RZ was simply history.

So this is mine;

Image

Highlights: matching numbers, 350 (albeit nasty home tuned with 250 oil pump and carbs lol) on 65.5 with Wisecos, has wheels, seat and rear bodywork.

Lowlights: no fairing, no pipes, no birdcage, no clocks, no tank.... and yeah let's talk about the elephant in the room, the frame is missing a little something LOL

Image

I think this can be repaired, this part of the frame is not easy to replace, but its not impossible as all the datum points for engine etc are above the cuts, just got to ensure the swinger is right to the engine cradle part and the swinger... we have the technology, I hope lol.

This is a pic of the 'home tune' cyls... eek! anyone want to comment on what these will be like to run?

Image

I guess I should start a list of whats missing and put it up here in case anyone has anything they can spare to help me build this one. Ive already found a headlight and some clocks in my spares, but fairings and tank are the most needed now, locally would be best for postage :/

Well Jon, you win the cake for finding the wildest horse to break in. Can't say that I've seen anything like that before.
The elephant, quick change engine! The porting, well, garish! I think it may run ok, you may be able to lay out something more aggressive to clean that garbage up. Something tells me a hog ported engine might work for you, as far as the n+1, number of bikes rule goes.
I have all the faith in the world that you can make Frankenstein breath again. I know this one will be a long time coming!

Rory, that horse analogy is too funny!
The engine is interesting, the PO obviously ran it with the 250 pump, yet the piston crowns were coked up, the rings gummed and the PVs leaked enough spooge to make stripping that area a very nasty experience. So, not only does it seem like it got enough oil, it also seemed to run ok for him, so maybe the porting hasnt ruined it too much... hmm... I might just run it and see what its like.

Zed, thanks for the kind offer, Im chasing a cradle locally at the mo, but I am interested in the kick stand part as the one here doesnt have one on it, sorry gpaddict. I'll PM you.

I'd run those barrels to see how things go. You never know...until you try.

Yes thats my plan I think, I do need to make sure the rings dont catch on those square edges, but a little extra filing on the edges isnt going to ruin them now is it lol.

Im not s'posed to be working on this bike but the attraction of the 'new project' means I cant seem to leave it alone.

The frame was totally stripped and Ive now pulled down the rest of the engine and will run it through my mates pro parts washer, it even has warm fluid which is perfect in winter and you dont even need gloves when using it! it does such a nice job of removing all the nasty stuff that ive all but given up on my home washer and its sits rusting quietly in the shed. On the F2 Ive washed most of the parts I took off the frame before they went into boxes, that way I don't have nasty oily, muddy, spoogy junk to start with when I do get going on this one. I've found that it's much more pleasant to sift through a box of parts if you don't need gloves!

The engine came apart ok and I will send the crank off to my guy (thanks Link!) to see what he thinks, but to me it feels ok... it was submerged in clean stroke when I got to it under the cyls, lets hope that was put in when the engine was taken out of the bike and not years later when it was already rusting, hmm... Will report back when I hear the verdict.

I've also found some more bits in my spares for this project - proving I was right to keep the boxes of bits all these years! I've got the frame parts needed to repair the frame and I located a set of faring mid panels and an airbox lid. I also found the set of clocks I built up a few years back as spares for my F1 and earmarked one of the screens that I collected and polished for that project to do duty on this one instead. I also grabbed the set of later style footrests I restored initially for the F1 as I've taken the decision to make that more original and its original footrests have been restored and refitted. I also found a set of 31k carbs, not pretty but should be usable. So its only been a week, but i'm getting there! :)

FWIW, I was a bit surprised by the stuff Im missing as I thought I had more RZ spares; notable exceptions so far being an oil tank (though I have a sender) and everything rear brake related, from the brake pedal to the caliper inclusive - I did find a caliper bracket though. Weird.

Ive also been cleaning up the piston with the stuck rings, its not budging... I've tried heat, penetrating oils and left it in the sun all day and so far nothing much is happening. any thoughts? I'd really like to save the rings if possible, I dont think Wiseco sell ring kits do they?

If you can't free them, it's time to replace everything.

Reborer has passed these cyls fit for further duty with a hone so new rings will be purchased.

In other news Ive bought a NOS seat for this project, here it is pictured with my newly acquired nos 29L seat.

Ive also had a few parts plated and even managed to powdercoat a few bits, but really I should leave this one alone for now.

I did have a quick sight down the frame, thing is a bit 'wonky', hmm... will be a bit of work to save it but needs must...

Hi Howard, Ive found one tho but thanks for the offer. Ive already had it plated actually, its stored away in the boxes for this bike now. Ive probably not mentioned a bunch of bits I bought and found for this one, but Im still looking for parts of course...

Looks like the cylinders just needed a hone and Ive ordered new rings.

I scored a tank which is dented but otherwise sound and picked up the front mounts and some fairing mid panel brackets. Ive also scored a repairable top fairing from LB (ta m8) and found the mid sections in my spares, along with a set of indicators. Just need the birdcage and lower now and that will be complete as Ive found a 'dashboard' NOS, I only need some clips for that and its sorted.

(photo'd with NOS trim strip and also LBs dash panel)

I also have a set of pipes in the rafters for this one... slowly but surely we get there....
