Does the bike still have the original fuse box?
If so the culprit may be in there.
The speedo drive may need grease or a new cable. Or the bearing in the speedo gauge could be shot.

The mechanical drive speedo in my FZ made weird whirring noises and the needle would jump up and down erratically. A replacement cable didn't solve the problem. One day the thing made a whirring-shattering noise and the speedo needle blew off its mount. The odometer drive kept working for a while after than and then also quit.

In the end I tracked the problem down to the plastic drive gear in the front hub. Yamaha made the drive gear out of plastic but does not (and never did) offer that gear as a replacement part. I managed to find a metal replacement gear at a local shop.

I also had to find a replacement speedo at great cost.

If your speedo is making a weird noise, the first thing I'd check would be the speedo drive gear.

I am stymied as to how an electrical problem could affect a wholly mechanical tach drive system?

is it wholly mechanical? looked like there were wires and a coil if I remember correctly... was a bit of a blur taking it apart. I was mainly focused on the idiot light wiring/ground

The tach drive is completely mechanical on an LC. The wires are for the illumination bulb.

The tach on a second gen RZ is electrical. Not sure about the first gen RZ but I'd suspect it is also mechanical.

The tach and speed meters are mechanical on my 84 RZ. Tach cable routed in between the two carburetors.

Gonna roll the dice if the compression checks out...

LC carbs. Dumped over $100 in new needle/seats so not going to toss those any time soon.

Do need some switches tho... final piece of the puzzle...

Not done with the RZ conversion...

Figured I would complicate matters by bringing another one into the room...
