The phrase in the southern US is 'shake like a dog passing a peach pit'.
Red/White US '84, Spec II pipes, Y-boot w/K&N, Fox Shock, Mikuni carbs?
Re: New project '85 RZ350 NC2
And funny enough, I first heard it in this song (first lyric):waltmil wrote:The phrase in the southern US is 'shake like a dog passing a peach pit'.

Re: New project '85 RZ350 NC2
Hey guys, looking for some more information. Hoping for some answers before the end of tomorrow. I was planning on having it powdercoated Friday.
I found that my upper oil tank bracket is missing. Broke off right near the frame. It appears that it was a very thin sheet metal that extends from the gusset plate in that area. I would like to see a photo of this piece so I can determine whether I should make a replacement and weld it in, or if I can attach the tank in another (better) way.
Would someone mind taking a detailed photo of their upper oil reservoir mounting point so I can see what it should look like, and if it will interfere with nearby parts?
edit: I am thinking of using a loop clamp like so: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com ... SX342_.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as long as it won't be visible or interfere with anything else.

Re: New project '85 RZ350 NC2
kobra, whereabouts in the bay area are you located?
There are a few of us around this area should you like to take a firsthand look at anything.

I'm in Santa Cruz! You know... I think I have actually met you before. Well, at least seen one or more of your bikes out at the junction. They usually grab a lot of attention and I was one of the onlookers. I hope to bring this RZ out there once it's done!kpke wrote:kobra, whereabouts in the bay area are you located?

I think I might take you up on that offer. Half of this struggle has been seeing where parts are supposed to go, since the previous owner had partially disassembled it.
brrrappp, thanks so much for the pics! It looks kinda like what I had imagined - I can see how it broke off since it's pretty thin. In fact, a lot of the brackets and clips on this frame are quite thin and flexy.
Re: New project '85 RZ350 NC2
Any chance I could get a picture or measurement of the height of the bracket, labeled below? It looks like about 3/8". A photo from the top-down would also work so I can see the depth of it relative to the frame rail.
Again thank you guys - you rock!!! I'm hoping to share some really cool progress on this project in return :)

The gap you are asking for between your red lines- from the face of the tab where the oil tank rests against it to the face of the tab where the bend toward the tank begins is 7mm or 3/10 of an inch.

Re: New project '85 RZ350 NC2
You are awesome!!!!! Seriously. Thank you.
Perhaps I could trouble you guys for one more... I apologize for being needy, but I have this powdercoat drop-off scheduled tomorrow and want to make sure everything is correct. I'd like to just powdercoat it once.. hehe.
I scanned all the welds, brackets, gussets, etc. The only thing that looks odd is these two tabs. One is bent over while the other is straight up vertically. What are they for? And should they both be straight up?
also for reference, this is what my upper oil tank bracket looked like:

The triangular plastic infills that cover that area locate on those and 2 rubber grommets that go on the dome headed pegs. The straight right side one is correct.

I will test fit those pieces and adjust as needed.
Re: New project '85 RZ350 NC2
Started working on the head today. One side has some damage when the piston grenaded. According to this sheet: https://www.millennium-tech.net/pdf/2_s ... needed.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I would classify mine as having moderate damage on the one side. I cleaned it up with a scotch brite wheel. I am afraid to remove too much material to smooth out the nicks so I just took off the sharp edges and then polished it.
Then I lapped it on a granite surface plate. The center section between the two cylinders was ever-so-slightly lower than the rest of it, Maybe .001" if that. It cleaned up with relative ease.

Re: New project '85 RZ350 NC2
Each night I have been working on one little piece, and the project becomes less and less daunting. Though still a lot more to keep me busy!
I tested the thermostat to ensure proper function. It begins opening at 160F and is fully opened by about 175-180F.
The YPVS servo looked crappy at first but cleaned up pretty nice! I will need to paint the aluminum parts of course...
