The top frame tubes are 1" OD.

So, I made a new template out of 1/2" stock (.475" actual) Then mounted it flush with the top of the upper bar.

Image

Will secure the brackets to the template to make sure they're level and on the same plane before welding.

Brackets welded in for the first panel.

Also cut, welded and filed brackets for the next panel. Constructed a nice welding jig, but broke it down before the pic was taken.

Steering damper mount welded to the frame. Test fitted the damper, and the height and angle are good. Measuring now for a custom titanium pin.

Also welded the throttle cable cut-out.

Beginning of a custom kickstarter.

The tool is 1" x 1" aluminum. It fits tightly into the kickstarter hole with no play/movement.

With the tool in place, I can make accurate measurements from the axis.

Was starting to fit brackets for another panel and had a better idea.

The frame tubings have an angle. I was going to use a flat carbon fiber panel, but you can see how it fit in the photo. The left side of the panel is at the top of the frame tube, the middle is at the bottom, and the right side is back at the top. The flat panel is great for mounting stuff, but looks less than custom.

I want to use 2 carbon panels, joined at the tubing bend. Will custom bend a titanium angle strip or 2 (top and bottom) to bond the panels together. Aluminum would be lighter, but if I TiN coat the strips, they'll match the panel hardware.

Just need to find out how thin I can go on the titanium for TiN coating.

Make a carbon panel with a bend in it, it is well within your abilities. You could also join two flat panels nicely without tons of effort if you don't care too much what the back side looks like.

Thanks. I did think about making an angled carbon panel- but then I would have to make all 3 panels, in order for them to match.

You know I care what the backside looks like. I love a good backside!

I don't think bending a strip of titanium is going to happen. Looks like I'll need 2 machined parts. Probably just a few bucks worth of titanium. And some machining. And some titanium nitriding. :smt003

Just received some rubber trim for the fuel tank. Will see if I can use something similar on the panels.

Getting better at making rigs and jigs to hold parts.

Tacked the steering lock stop.

A while back, I remade the custom steering stop. I made the spacing perfect to the frame, but when I fitted the fuel tank, the spacing was a little off. I forgot about the lock stop. When I went to tack in the lock stop, it didn't fit anymore. Shaved both sides of the lock stop a few times to get the fit right, again.

Went through three different types/sizes of wire to get a good hold. Using 1mm stainless wire, threaded through the frame and headstock.

Next, TIG brazing the lock stop, so the head tube doesn't distort from welding.

Titanium pin for mounting the steering damper. Needs polishing and gold titanium nitriding.

Also need to order proper titanium hardware.

Welded a bung onto the battery box to hold a rubber grommet. The mounting bolt head sits inside the bung, under the battery.

Next, need a machined collar/spacer to fit under the grommet.

This sweet little bracket was cut from a steel bar.

To be welded to the frame for securing the battery box.

Image

Now the bad news. Of course, I fucked it up because I can't make anything right the first time.

Image

The hole lines up perfectly with the upper hash mark. Unfortunately, it's supposed to line up with the lower hash mark. Incredibly stupid on my part.

I could just weld the bracket on the battery box 1/2" higher and use the steel frame bracket. But then, my artistic vision for this piece would be lost. :smt003

The battery box bracket should be the same distance from the bottom that the strap bracket is from the top. (And both brackets should be the same width.)

Damned artistic vision costing me time and money.

Made a spacer for the battery box.

Still need to clean up and polish the box.
