Ok, so I paid Steve for my 2 "O" ring heads. The only problem is...I don't have them yet. I surprised Steve with all the cash he needed for my two. He didn't have them with him at work today. Oh well, I guess I might see them next week. Unless, of course, Steve comes to my place this weekend with the heads and the Toomies, to trade me for a near mint '85 tank I have that I don't really want to trade away, but, Toomies. I don't have a set of those yet. I guess it's up to Steve.

Jon, I love burgers!

Offroad,
As a lurker for a while, and a brand new member of the forum (after buying two '85's), thank you for this thread. I've been reading all 80 pages over the last few days. I've learned a lot (and thanks to the other members with their builds and advice!). Oh and the bike looks great. Black, purple, doesn't matter, it's the attitude of the bike, and apparently the owner. You are Cool Hand Luke. Up for any challenge no matter how absurd. I'm sure you could easily eat 50 eggs, just polish them first. ;)

Good evening folks.

To begin with, I want to apologize in advance for what's going to be a long and rambling post.
But, it's been a long week at work, and now that I finally had a day off, I decided to relax.
The relaxation started early, and I think it's fair to say that I may have lost touch with reality a couple of hours ago.

First off I want to thank Disco for the great review. Cool post, and I really appreciate your comments.
But I can't believe you read all 80 pages. You need to find another hobby. :smt003

I really like this bike. It handles nice, stops great, the engine pulls strong.
The bike runs great, pulls like a train, and requires zero maintenance.
It's damn near bullet proof.

So, the only thing that's happening with the project bike, is that I've been riding it.
It's Summer. In Canada, Summer is short. Summer is not the time to be working on your bike. Summer is the time for riding.

But it rained today, so I'm looking for another way to amuse myself, so I thought I'd use post 6 of 12, and tell you a project-related story.
Let's start with a brief recap of what's happened so far.

Last Summer I acquired a complete, good running RZ engine.
I thought it would be a good idea to have a spare engine, just in case 1 of my tuning experiments went horribly wrong.

Last December, I put my spare motor in the Purple frame, installed some new tires, chain, sprockets, steering bearings, fork seals,
and rebuilt the bike back to stock.

In January, I got talking to some people, and it started me to thinking.
On the dyno, the 2 stock RZ's that I had, made 42 and 45 HP.
The 2 bikes that I currently have, both made 60 HP on the dyno.

What would I rather have, a stock 45 HP RZ, or a new motor that makes more than 60 HP?
Hmmm. Let me think about that for a minute.

Sold the RZ in February.

So far, my big engine build consists of gathering a few miscellaneous parts.

I have a complete engine. It's in a dozen pieces and needs just about everything, like:
Crank, pistons, head, cylinder re-bore, seals, gaskets, reeds, clutch, clutch basket, and 100 other things.

I also have a pair of low bore 31K cylinders, a rebuilt oil pump, and an o-ring head.

And this bring us to the latest development with the new plan.

However, before I show you what I found, I have an important message for Rory.
Please do not read the rest of this post.
Just move along, because you really don't want to see this.

I was cleaning out the garage last week, and dug out some New / 30 Year Old parts that might be useful.

On the other hand, they might be the wrong size, wrong shape, wrong color. :smt012

And finally, just to remind you in case you weren't paying attention earlier, I'm keeping 2 of the o-ring heads.
One for the new motor, and one as a spare.

Wow. I really fucked up this time, so I deleted most of my previous post.

Slinger. I apologize. I Never meant to criticize you, or the work that you did.
You gave me a great deal on the parts and I'm really happy with everything that I got.
I know that the payment and shipping confusion was all my fault.
I'm really sorry that I've pissed you off.
My only intention was to amuse some of the forum members for a few minutes.
The whole post could have been said in 7 sentences.

-I wanted 1 o-ring head for a new motor.
-I came up with a plan to get 7 o-ring heads, sell the extras, and get my head for free.
-However, I had no extra money laying around, so I made the deal complex and confusing.
-The heads ended up costing me a few dollars more than I originally planed.
-Since I'm a really bad salesman, I sold the extra heads for cost, and in some cases, for less than cost.
-My big money making plan was a failure.
-I should have just bought 1 o-ring head for my new motor, it would have been easier and cheaper.

And I really wasn't complaining about the quantity of o-rings, or the cost of buying some spares.
The extra couple of dollars doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things.
It was only mentioned as an another example of how my poor planning ended up costing me a few dollars more than I originally thought.

After re-reading my post, I realize that the "bad slinger" comment was a probably stupid thing to say.
Honestly, when I wrote it, I thought I was being funny. I really did.
Obviously, I was wrong.

My previous post was meant to be funny and amusing.
My big plan fails and ends up costing me extra time and money.
It was never meant as a complaint or a criticism of Slingers work.
I want to apologize misunderstanding that I might have caused, due to my poor judgement.

Slinger, you're a professional to deal with.
Your information and advice is extremely helpful.
Your prices are fair and reasonable.
And the quality of your work is second to none.

I'm really sorry that my comments offended you. It won't happen again.

Regards,
Steve

Off Road,
All whom read your posts on this forum know your style and humor. Well...save one apparently.

Most here only know you from your detailed "novellas"..lol But that dude knows you on a personal/professional level and still made the choice to treat a friend as well as a completely kind hearted, no conflict forum member such as youself in a rather unflattering manner. If anyone owes an apology its not primarily you.

I realize that said indavidual is held in high regard to some of you, so hopefully you can work out your misunderstanding off line, which seems pretty dammed trivial on both sides. Perhaps a bad day and a little too much alcohol.
Good Luck

Slinger gave me a really good deal on some o-ring heads.
After getting this deal, I went on a public forum and commented that he only supplied 1 set of o-rings with each head.
Sure, I put a smilee icon behind it, but still, I can see how that might piss a guy off.
I never meant imply that that Slinger did anything wrong, or that I was unhappy. I'm sorry that it came across that way.

And now, back to the Project Bike, but first, a weather report.
The weather sucks.
We had an early Spring. I went for the first ride of the year on March 27.
April and May were not bad. Decent sunshine and, for a few hours in the afternoon, the temperatures were getting up to 15* - 20*C (60* - 70*F).
June was OK. But still not very hot.
In July it rained. By the end of July, we had already exceeded our average Yearly rainfall.
And 60% of the rain fell in July.
In August, the days got shorter, the daily high temps lower, and the leaves on the trees have started to change color.
Summer is ending fast.

All my rides so far this year have been to the North, South, or East of the city, where roads are straight and flat.
So flat that you can watch your dog run away from home, for 3 days.

Image

The weather forecast said that last Sunday was going to be nice, so a buddy and I decided to get out of the city.
We went 100 miles West.
Where there are Hills, and the roads have Corners.
Uphill, downhill, off camber, decreasing radius.

Awesome ride. The bike ran great. But...

There is a small "clunk" in the steering when the brakes are first applied.
Suspect loose steering bearings, but I need to look into that.

And my rear tire is done.
The center has flattened off from accelerating away from stop lights in town, and screaming up and down the straight highway.
It still has tread on edges, but the center is down to the wear-bar.
The front tire is still OK, but it's also getting a noticeable flat spot running down center.

Definitely need a new rear tire.
Might need a new rear wheel, because nobody makes a good (soft, sticky) radial tire for an 18" x 4" wheel.

Yesterday, I parked the bike at the shop until I get some time to do some work on it.

Fortunately, I had a backup plan, with a brand new set of Bridgestone BT45's.

Image

Rode the red bike home last night and noticed 2 things.
At highway speeds, the red bike has much quicker steering, and my butt dyno says that it also has more power.

The Purple Bike is parked for the year.
It will be disassembled. It will be cleaned. It will be changed.
Still planning on using one of the o-ring heads on the new motor.
