I am curious, when you get a rebuilt oil pump from Arrow, is it bolt on?

Or do you still need to be concerned with shims and set up?

Yes as Mark says, you just bolt it on and bleed it up. The pumps are really stunning to look at, but the true value of his service is that you know that its working correctly. Not even brand new yam pumps work properly and give the correct stroke he's found, and old ones can be quite worn. I have his pumps on all my bikes, I consider it 'cheap insurance'. The pump on this bike was originally rebuilt by me with new seals and cleaned NRVs, but comparing the two... well... chalk and cheese to look at and Im sure the one I did doesnt have the full stroke or something, as it feels very different in the hand.

Ive had 6 or 7 done & yes Gary sends them ready to bolt on all shimed & ready to go. He can supply oil lines, clips etc. He can even set the oil pump for different sized engines, just tell him what its for.

I'll preface this with the fact its not at all a slur on Mark in what comes next, just an observation on my part: I still really just don't understand why people don't just send their pump to Gary as soon as they start their resto, it would be getting done in the background while they do other things and once it's back you know for sure that its working properly on the correct metering for your engine etc. Its cheap insurance etc. A local mate of mine just sent the one he serviced and rebuilt himself as I convinced him he should... and on test it was on the minimum stroke. Gary is refurbing it fully and getting it right this time round. Considering the cost of an engine build, his prices are really super reasonable. On that note another mate called me the yesterday to question his quote from Gary for an uprated pump for his 421, suggesting it was too cheap LOL.

Anyway, Im back from my holiday now and Im looking at my F1 and it needs new tyres... the old Dunlops are cracking, I wasnt ever going to use them anyway, but theyve survived a long time, I think theyre from 2004. However, to confuse matters Ive just happened across a set of the later 'lighter' 86-on wheels. Im thinking I will polish and paint these the same colourway as the OEM 83-5 models and then fit them to improve handling (unsprung weight) while looking much the same as OEM. So while this is not in the 'this is now a restoration' plan, it is something I always planned for this bike.

Image

I am also still considering the newly restored OEM footrests... sure, theyre beautiful now, but I really do prefer the look of the blasted later model versions I did a few years back LOL!

Damn... The call of modification is always so strong on our bikes! :smt021 :smt003

In the meantime Im continuing with cleaning up bolts and other parts for plating like I mentioned in the LC resto thread. There are actually a few engine bolts, especially the '9's that hold the motor in and the long engine mount bolts in the set I had done for the LC for this bike. I plan to go through and re-do as many of the zinc'd bolts and parts as possible now ive started down this road, and this bike will benefit from that work. I guess thats the thing about having so many projects, I have enough bolts and parts to do a few sets and then swap the parts over onto the already built bikes and improve them and then send those swapped parts out and have them done. I do keep finding caches of bolts in bags every box I open of course, I just hope I remember where they all go... of course, im taking notes and photos, dont worry! :smt002 :smt003

Was interested to know how much less the 'lightweight' 86-on wheels were than the early RZs....

Ok, this wasnt mega scientific as I was dong this between other more urgent tasks. Tyres removed, wheel weights still on and valves still in place, but cush drive rubbers removed from rear wheels, no brake disks but with old horrible bearings etc.

Early Front is 4815g vs Later Front at 4505g, so approx. 300g saved.

Early Rear is 5790g vs Later Rear at 5300g, so again approx. another 300g saved.

This is unsprung weight of course and the disks and cush drives are the same for both bikes. Whats interesting is that 300g isnt very much really and if you picked a heavy tyre you could easily negate this saving without knowing it, hmm...

As an aside, I did weigh the cush drive rubbers and they came out at a scary 500g a set!

The discs are thinner on the F2. More weight savings there. Roughly a kilo per set.

It should be noted that the calipers changed as well.

Yes they did, tho the fronts became 2 pots so a bit heavier in that respect, yet they didnt have the solid cast iron brackets with hardened steel pins which do weigh a ton... I will weigh the 31ks when Ive rebuilt them and compare to some F1s I have, will be interesting to see. The rear remained a 2 pot on an alloy bracket, different caliper but much the same weight id think? only a few grams in that... Different swingers, but again not much in it... 100g maybe, if that.... yet it all helps I guess.

And then Photobucket came and Fucked it all up for everyone...

This build started off with Imageshack hosting the photos, they got greedy and while they continued to host the photos for a while I moved to Photobucket and all was great with the world until they decided we needed to pay $399/yr to post our pics across the net.

So, Thanks photobucket, you trashed this thread and thousands (more like millions!) of other around the world.

IF YOU WANT TO READ THIS THREAD WITH THE PHOTOS AND MY REHASHED TEXTS (BUT NOT THE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON THE THREAD), HAVE A LOOK AT MY WEBSITE, 2SMOKED.COM.
